pashek Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 I am considering a trip to New York in November. I know it is a busy time and would appreciate some input as to hotel prices for this time. I'd obviously like to be fairly central and would prefer 3 or 4 *. If for example I was looking at 9th - 13th November, what would my choices be? I see prices of about $120 being bandied about for August, what premium does November add to this? Thanks in advance, glad I found this forum, it'll help keep my expectations in check.
Blueskies Posted July 20, 2006 Report Posted July 20, 2006 Pashek, Why don't you use the betterchecker for your date to see what comes up conventionally and also look at the NY Priceline map and click on the hotels you are interested on and you will see the winning bids and the dates. That will help. Alternatively you could search the NY section of the website. It is pretty expensive Oct - Christmas.Good luck

I've had a look and tried researching. Around the time I want to go last year people were still managing bids of $120 for the Hilton! I thought this was fantastic but the bids tend to be within a month of the booking. I've tried bids around the $120 - $130 range and unsurprisingly got nowhere. Is my best policy to wait until the hotels free up rooms at cheaper prices (ie. within a month of the required dates)? I will be booking my flights as well as a backup today so I am willing to wait it out.It is pretty expensive Oct - Christmas.Good luckI hope to be like one of the people last year and prove this wrong but I believe I will need all the luck in the world! Thanks.

Book your backup and then probably keep bidding, maybe once a week, until you get closer. I'd also have a try at HOTWIRE to get a baseline of the prices there, then sign up to receive e-mail notification if prices drop. That's a good (but not perfect) indicator that cheaper inventory might have been released to priceline, too. What zones are you bidding in? Also let us know the cost of your backup once you book it.Good luck!
Blueskies Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 Pashek, Your dates are the week following the marathon. It's on 5th. Hilton & Towers is used as a base during this so very busy. I would think that most of those who stay on after the race will have headed out by Thursday. The Christmas Spectacular will be on at Radio City, across the street as it starts before the marathon event. You also have veterans day in your stay and the length of trip will have a bearing too.I am visiting in October and November , hoping to get decent rates nearer the time but have back ups just in case.
pashek Posted July 21, 2006 Author Report Posted July 21, 2006 My dates are confirmed as 9th November - 13th November. I tried bidding today on Priceline with no success. It went a little like this:MTE: 120 rejectedMTE + UES: 123 rejectedMTE + UES + UWS: 125 rejectedMTE + UES + UWS + MTW: 130 rejectedDidn't really think this would work and it didn't. Had a look on Priceline and the Hyatt and Hilton hotels are both sitting around the $440 mark. Realistically, what would I have to bid to secure rooms in these hotels? Hotwire gives me a 3.5 star in Midtown Central for $205. How should I view the Hotwire price? Is it a fair guide for what I should be bidding on Priceline or can I undercut it and if so by how much?Again, thanks for the help. I am looking into my backup now, any suggestions? I've been looking at the Herald Square Hotel (http://www.heraldsquarehotel.com). Rates are around $170, location seems good and tripadvisor reviews seem favorable.
Blueskies Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 Pashek,I think I would stick with that until the end of August then have another go. The ones that I looked at were over $300 and the reviews of this one are very good. Might look into it for one of my trips.
dahammer Posted July 21, 2006 Report Posted July 21, 2006 I've been looking at the Herald Square Hotel I stayed at the 1* Herald Square two years ago, a last minute choice while visiting a trade show at the Javits Center. At the time, many hotels were either sold out or had sky high prices, so I ended up here. The Lobby is small, the clerk is behind security glass. The single elevator is big enough for about 4 people without luggage and was slow. The room was dark, a window opened up into a view of a wall, the bathroom was tiny, the Air Conditioning was weak, the hallway was dark. This was OK for one night, but I could not imagine staying here for 4 days.On the plus side, you will be close to Macy's and several good Korean restaurants in case you need a BulGoGi fix :) The building is a historic landmark and once was the headquarters for Life magazine. A family member has stayed at the Red Roof Inn which is in the same nieghborhood, as is the LaQuinta Inn.
powerplantop Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 On the plus side, you will be close to Macy's and several good Korean restaurants in case you need a BulGoGi fix :)That's a selling point for me! But I would most likely go for the Kalbi.
dahammer Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 But I would most likely go for the Kalbi a fine choice! I have had BBQ short ribs several times at Korean restaurants, but didn't know I was eating Kalbi.. :) During your next stint in Queens, try the Picnic Garden Korean Buffet BBQ on Northern Blvd. in East Elmhurst. Its a bargain at around $17; you bring the raw meat back and cook it on the gas grill in the middle of your table. A waitress tends to the grill occasionally, and brings out the traditional condiments along with a basket of green lettuce leaves. OB Beer and Soju are available.
thereuare Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 ...you bring the raw meat back and cook it on the gas grill in the middle of your table.I go out to eat so i don't have to cook :) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
powerplantop Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 The Picnic Garden is good and a great value. But I have started going to another place at least once a week. Don't know the name, will look next time I go in. From Union make a right turn on 37th. It is almost on the corner across from the parking lot. It is open 24hrs. No gas they use real charcoal.
powerplantop Posted July 22, 2006 Report Posted July 22, 2006 I go out to eat so i don't have to cook :)And to think I had such high hopes for you. :)
dahammer Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 No gas they use real charcoalI've never been to one that used real charcoal....gotta go therefor sure
