dahammer Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 The 2* in Hotwire's Jersey City zone has finally been revealed! Room inventory was really tight, I got about 10 rejections with Priceline in the Jersey City and Secaucus-Meadowlands, and Secaucus-North Bergen zone, my highest bid was $110. Many Hotels in Secaucus were sold out as well. Using Orbitz, I looked for a 2* property that offered the following amenities: Airport Shuttle, Fitness Center, Business Center. Orbitz showed the 2* Ramada Ltd that matched the amenities @ $118. The giveaway was the airport shuttle as Newark Liberty Airport is not exact close to this hotel (as I checked in, a flight crew just arrived). I took a leap of faith and bought the room for $110 and I was right:Ramada Limited Jersey City 65 Tonnelle AveJersey City, New Jersey 07306(201) 432-6100 Taxes were a whopping $19.95 making this room $129.95. A little steep for my taste given its low star rating. I think that the rate was high due to a large trade show at the Javits Center, as well as the increase in tourism in genral to the NYC area so far this June. I have seen this 2* go for lots less, around $55 or so in the past. This hotel is a block away from the Journal Square PATH Station, very convenient. It is a block away from JFK Boulevard and is in a residential area of multi-family dwellings. Continental breakfast is included and the shuttle to Newark is free, parking is $8.00 for 24 hours and the garage is not affiliated with the hotel. Also, wired high speed internet is free as well. The building is fairly old and was re-habbed a few years ago, this is a solid 2* with few frills. For someone flying into EWR who wants a basic room with convenient public transportation to the NYC, this might be a good choice.
thereuare Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Thank you very much for identifying this mystery 2* property.Sounds a lot better than the potential properties on Routes 1&9 that this could have been!Enjoy the rest of your stay. dahammer Posted June 15, 2005 Author Report Posted June 15, 2005 the hotels on Rt. 1&9 are scary, and I've stayed at the Holland Motor Lodge!!! :) The property started out in the 1920's as an apartment building and was converted about 5 years ago to a hotel, not sure how long it has been part of Ramada. The rooms also have mini-refrigerators and microwave ovens. My first room had a broken air-conditioner so I was moved to a new room where the AC worked fine. Both rooms were decent in size and clean. One of the unusual features of this hotel is a rooftop deck above the 5th floor. Not spectacular views, but with your significant other :) and a cooler of adult beverages, a good spot to watch the sun's rays play off the NYC skyline. Dining options in the area are pretty limited, mostly take out or delivery. Hoboken and all the restaurants on Washington Ave beckon, just a short ride away via PATH.
Scorp Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Dahammer, I have to say ... with your great attitude and exuberant personality, I can't believe you ever get a bad room!!!
dahammer Posted June 15, 2005 Author Report Posted June 15, 2005 Dahammer, I have to say ... with your great attitude and exuberant personality, I can't believe you ever get a bad room!!!well, I finally came clean and admitted to staying at the Holland Motor Lodge!!!! The room was ok, and the Hotel was fine, as long as you didn't leave your room :) Maybe this should be a new topic, "Rooms from H***" what do you think? One time I had to travel to Wyalusing, PA a one stop light town on a scenic stretch of Pennsylvania two lane blacktop, Route 6 not too far from the Grand Canyon of PA near Wellsboro. (Watch your speed in Lacyville, PA I got pulled over and ticketed by the Chief of Police) Decided to try the Wyalusing Hotel in town, the hotel was built in the 1920's and had the original spring mattress. Almost like the hotel in the HBO series "Deadwood" :) Also, I was unable to dial out through the antiquated phone system (kind of like the one in the TV show "Green Acres") so I checked out and drove 12 miles to stay in a Comfort Inn near Towanda.
dahammer Posted July 15, 2005 Author Report Posted July 15, 2005 I just reviewed my credit card statement and the Ramada charged $94.75, which I assume are the charges that Hotwire paid to the Ramada for room and tax...if my assumptions are correct, Hotwire's fee for this booking was $35.20 :) or about 37%
