grayh Posted August 29, 2011 Author Report Posted August 29, 2011 Hi,my father booked a Hotel for me with his credit card via Priceline. It's a Hilton Hotel in London. I know that I need a credit card at check-in and my father wants to give me his credit card (the same one he used to book the Hotel) and pin number, but obviously it's a credit card on his name (same family name though).Do you think there might be problems at check-in if I present them my ID and his credit card?
thereuare Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Is this for your Hilton Kensington or yiour Hilton Hyde Park stay? (after you're reply we'll merge with your current thread)I'm assuming you don't have a credit card in your own name? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. grayh Posted August 29, 2011 Author Report Posted August 29, 2011 Correct. This only goes for the Hilton Hyde Park. I usually always travel with another person who has a credit card with the exception of my stay in Hilton Hyde Park.
Gallus50 Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 Once the hotel is booked, the deal is done and you don't necessarily need that exact credit card. You do usually need a card for "incidentals". You could bring the same card and explain your situation. Hopefully, they'll be reasonable. Or you could use another card. I don't think they will care.
grayh Posted August 29, 2011 Author Report Posted August 29, 2011 Actually, it would be the same credit card that was used to pay the room via Priceline. The only thing that concerns me is that the card belongs to my dad and has his name on it, so credit card name and (my) ID name don't match. But I will get his pin number so they should know that I haven't stolen the card or whatever.Maybe I should take a written cofirmation from my dad with me that I'm allowed to use his card?
blkjck1 Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 You may be hard-pressed to have the hotel accept your Dad's own credit card, even if you have his written permission. From their point of view, you could have stolen the card, forged a permission letter, and then put a ton of room service charges on the card. Your Dad could potentially dispute the charges after you got back, saying he never authorized it, leaving either the credit card issuer or hotel holding the bag. If you have a ton of lead time, I would apply for a credit card of some sort in your own name, or have your Dad add you as a supplementary card holder to his account. The hotel may ask for a sizable cash deposit in lieu of a credit card. Proud to be Canadian!
hohogap Posted August 29, 2011 Report Posted August 29, 2011 My experience over the past 10 years with Priceline is similar, in that they "generally" require only a government ID that shows you are the person in whose name the reservation was made (not necessarily needing the same credit card). PL hotels almost always require some credit card for incidentals upon check-in. In one instance, I had used my father's credit card to charge the PL room near Petualuma, CA (he wound up not accompanying me on the trip) and the desk clerk required the actual credit card (which I didn't have). The clerk was finally appeased when they called my dad and he read the ID code on the back. I've booked many PL rooms overseas and they can often be more of sticklers with the room ID, etc. I'd take your dad's credit card for good use and be as pleasant and cooperative with the desk clerk as possible. Doesn't help to mention the hotel charge was a gift from your dad and that you're so happy to be at the Hilton! Good luck.
grayh Posted August 29, 2011 Author Report Posted August 29, 2011 Thanks, I guess I'll try my luck and as a plan b, take lots of cash with me. Anyone know how much Hilton Hotels charge as a deposit?
thereuare Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 The issue here is not that the OP is stating that they want to use a different credit card then which was used to book, but that they don't have a credit card at all...I would have your dad call (or email to begin if don't have the ability to inexpensively make an overseas call) and ask if he can give his credit card number over the phone to cover any incidentals, or if he can fax it in with a signature, or if the hotel prefers to give a written note along with you have his credit card physically in hand. If the hotel refuses you can then ask how much of a cash deposit is required, but i think your chances of having them accept his credit card (most likely with a fax) is better then 50/50, especially if you and he have the same last name. The above will take care of the situation in the nearterm, but for the longer term, i would see if you can either get a credit card on your own OR if he will get an additional card for you on his account (even if he holds it except for when you're traveling)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck. grayh Posted August 30, 2011 Author Report Posted August 30, 2011 I sent them an Email asking exactly what you proposed. I will post their answer as soon as I receive it in case anyone else might have the same problem.
grayh Posted August 30, 2011 Author Report Posted August 30, 2011 So, the Hilton assistant has forwarded it to the Hotel. He said I'd have to request a Credit Card authorization and the Hotel will get back to me for that. hyatt.com/hyatt/customer-service/ccauth_hotels.pdfThat's an example from Hyatt. So maybe it will be that easy too.
hohogap Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Thanks for the update and I'm glad there's apparently an alternative we can use if needed!
grayh Posted September 11, 2011 Author Report Posted September 11, 2011 Hey Guys, just wanted to let you know that everything worked out fine. I didn't even need to show them the CC or a copy of it. Everything was solved due to the CC authorization form I've sent them a week before the trip. The Hotel itself is rather old and it's not really a 4* if you ask me, but the staff was friendly and the location is excellent.
