AllBusiness Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 I feel a bit like a fool here. I've read through about 2 dozen posts on the re-bidding process. I understand the concept of adding zones that don't include the star level you are seeking.... but I can't seem to determine which zones those are. Every post regarding NYC says there are 5 rebid zones at the **** level. When I look at Priceline, it says there are no **** hotels in:BrookylnChelseaLGAJFKLong IslandBronxThis is 6. I must be doing something wrong. Can I get a bit of assistance?
BayArea1227 Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 Hey AllBusiness, I don't see the bronx as a city in the New York City area. These are the locations which I see on PRICELINE.COM under NAME YOUR OWN PRICE (HOTELS):1 Brooklyn 2 Central Park South 3 Chelsea Area 4 Downtown - SoHo - Financial District 5 Empire State Building Area 6 Hell's Kitchen - This area is not available.7 Long Island City 8 Madison Square Garden - Convention Area 9 Midtown East 10 Midtown West 11 Times Square 12 Upper East Side 13 Upper West Side The areas that do not have the 4* hotels that could be utilized as the RE-BID areas are the following: BrooklynChelsea AreaLong Island CityMadison Square Garden - Convention AreaUpper East SideI tried to see where you were seeing the LGA and JFK area, but I couldn't find those areas. Just make sure you are typing in New York City, NY. Hope this helps!

thereuare Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 AllBusiness,It appears you're using the "retail" version of PRICELINE to determine your re-bid zones which is NOT correct. The two sides of PRICELINE's service use a different universe of hotels, not to mention use different zones and boundaries (which is the issue you're having above)See the Priceline Re-Bidding Explained link posted by yellowdog to explain how to determine your re-bid zones. Also, since new hotels are added all the time and other hotels are upgraded/downgrade, it's important you know how to check these on your own (rather than just using the zones that BayArea1227 posted). If you use a list of re-bid zones posted, the zones can change between the time posted and the time you bid, which could result in winning a hotel outside of the area you intended. If you read the Priceline Re-Bidding Explained thread and are confused just post back and we'll break it down further for you step-by-step.Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... and your searches too! AllBusiness Posted April 1, 2010 Author Report Posted April 1, 2010 Got it- thanks for the clarification. So I entered into my first bidding last night. Zones I'd like to stay in are CPS, MTE, MTW, and TSTD. My bids started at $130 and I made it all the way up to $185 without any success. I guess I will try again this evening. Should I start below $185?
dahammer Posted April 1, 2010 Report Posted April 1, 2010 prices can vary depending on your dates of travel, can you please post your date(s)?

AllBusiness Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 I hadn't really thought of a minimum bid. I guess $200 but this seems awfully high compared to other winning bids on the calendar. I just want to be in a nice hotel in a convenient part of NYC. I will be there Apr 16th-18th.
AllBusiness Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 Possibly staying the 19th as well.

AllBusiness Posted April 2, 2010 Author Report Posted April 2, 2010 Cool. So April 16th, departing the 19th. I'd like to see something under $200.
thereuare Posted April 2, 2010 Report Posted April 2, 2010 At the 4* level you have FIVE re-bid zones. AllBusiness Posted April 3, 2010 Author Report Posted April 3, 2010 Thanks for the strategy! Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful bidding up to $200. What do you recommend now - keep retrying or raise my max? Most of the winning bids on the calendar are well below $200...
AaronJB Posted April 3, 2010 Report Posted April 3, 2010 There is a 4* ESB for $185 on HOTWIRE - would ESB be of any interest? I think you're not far off in terms of MTE, given that there's a 4* MTE on HOTWIRE for $230 - you could try again at $205, then $210, etc, keeping the $230 MTE in mind. Please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Do prices tend to increase or decrease the dates draw nearer?
yellowdog Posted April 4, 2010 Report Posted April 4, 2010 AllBusinessThere's no general answer to your question. Please read this link: Should i Bid Early or Close to Arrival Date Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Yellowdog.
AaronJB Posted April 4, 2010 Report Posted April 4, 2010 There is no way to know if prices will come down closer to the date of travel, but the risk of that is that prices can very easily ramp higher. Otherwise though, given that these particular dates are only less than a couple of weeks away, rates probably will not change much.
AllBusiness Posted April 5, 2010 Author Report Posted April 5, 2010 I guess I will throw a few bids at the ESB district as well. Can you help me devise a bidding strategy that includes this as an option as well?A friend recently recommended staying in the Union Square area... I can't really find anything on priceline that covers this area... ESB looks like the closest thing. Is this correct? Thanks!
AllBusiness Posted April 6, 2010 Author Report Posted April 6, 2010 $200 for Hilton Times Square. Not our first choice but should be a great time considering one of us has never been to NYC before! Thanks to everyone for their help!
AaronJB Posted April 6, 2010 Report Posted April 6, 2010 Congratulations on your success! :)This is a tremendous deal for a well-reviewed TS (which tends to be the most expensive zone in the city) property.Thank you for sharing your win with the board and please use the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
