Once again Priceline failed to get me a 2.5* hotel in South San Francisco up to $45, and it's supposed to rain over the next few days, so I had a good excuse to stay downtown and unmask another Hotwire hotel.

Dakota Hotel

606 Post St.

San Francisco, California 94109

1 room(s) @ $39.00 per night x 1 night(s) $39.00

Taxes and fees: $11.95

Total Price $50.95

This was shown on Hotwire's screen as a 2* hotel with no amenities.

Expedia: $58 + taxes/fees = $66.51

This is only my second 2* in USW (the other was the Adante). I'm one who has no problem crossing the Tenderloin in SF, or walking between clubs in East St. Louis, at 2 AM. I've also traveled alone to Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean, so don't use me as a gauge of safety... ;-)

The Dakota's location at Post and Taylor is very good. One shouldn't expect any problem there. The Adante is one block down, at Geary and Taylor, still not too shabby, and the 2.5* Mark Twain is further down on Taylor - in the Tenderloin but next door to Hilton so enough tourist traffic to give a feeling of safety.

As far as inside the hotel, these were definitely tourist hotels with 24-hour service. No transients.

$39 is not very impressive. A couple of weekends ago I got the Mark Twain for $31.

P.S., this will be one of my last hotel stays for some time. I've gotten tired of the frequent inability to get a hotel in SSF, and when one was available, I couldn't get it for more than a few nights at a time. I've accepted an offer from a friend to share his luxury condo, after his partner leaves next week. I'll live there until it's time to go back to St. Louis for the summer. Call me crazy but I can't stand SF in the summer with 60 degrees. This Israeli needs 90s with 98% humidity.
