I know this is too late for this particular request but for future reference, the Hotwire South San Jose zone typically lists 3 hotels. My guess is:

3* Dolce-Hayes Mansion

2.5* Holiday Inn (possibly Extended Stay Deluxe)

2* Extended Stay (possibly Extended Stay Deluxe next door)

It is interesting that the 3* is usually the cheapest, especially on weekends. For example, for November 19-23, 2009 (thu-fri-sat-sun) it shows $39 per night. That is what convinces me it is the Hayes Mansion which can usually be gotten on Priceline for under $40 per night - a great bargain!

You can take the risk away by bidding 3* in Priceline's South San Jose. The Hayes Mansion is currently the only 3* in that zone and unless they are booked up with a conference or wedding you can get in for under $40.
