New at This Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Hotwire has a 2 1/2* in Staten Island. Has comp Breakfast, fitness center, rest on site, laundry, golf and tennis nearby. Any ideas where this might be? Trying to get near transportation into the city. Tried looking for Jersey City waterfront, I just don't know how to find it. Can you specify waterfront? I know nothing of the area except reading one of your posts to someone that said for trans. ease, waterfront was best. We are planning to go into the city and do all the touristy things, Empire State, Statue of Liberty, etc. Is there a better location? My husband and I will be traveling with our sons age 13 and 18. Oct. 8-10, 2 nights. Attempting to stay in the $90 - 120 range. Thanks for your help.
dahammer Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Welcome!I found this HOTWIRE listing when I searched for 2 adults, but not when searching for two additional children. These amenities as well as the Tripadvisor ratings are a match for the Staten Island Hotel. If your were to book this hotel, you might end up getting a room with one king bed or have to pay for an upgrade if available. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.
New at This Posted September 28, 2009 Author Report Posted September 28, 2009 I am trying to find a hotel near the city that is convenient to public transportation for a family. In reading your posts, it sounds like Jersey City would be a great option if you can get on the waterfront. However, I don't know how to find if a hotel is on the waterfront. I have never tried booking a room like this before. We will need a room for 10/8 and 10/9. There are 4 of us traveling, my husband and 2 sons (age 13 and 18). Is there a way to tell about its proximity to public trans to city? Would still prefer Jersey City but since we have never been to the city and know NOTHING about the area, safety would be highest priority. Thanks for your help.
thereuare Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Please keep all posts for the same stay in the same thread.Generally speaking you wouldn't want to use Staten Island as a NYC substitute as it's not that convenient. (need to get to the ferry termial then a 30 minute trip to/from Manhattan)Rate are high for these dates and i'm doubtful you're going to find anything acceptable on Manhattan or in the waterfront area of Jersey City at $120 or less... do you have any back-up plan/reservation?Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. New at This Posted September 29, 2009 Author Report Posted September 29, 2009 Still haven't gotten anything in NYC/Jersey area. Looking into just booking at Comfort Suites, Newark. Can get a room for $125 with 2Q and sofa. Says its close to PATH. This HOTWIRE thing is very frustrating. Everyone said it was great, but I keep running into dead ends. However, I thought I would try checking into a night in Philly on Oct 7. Suggestions?Found Old Town -Penns Landing with: Business center, laundry avail, no smoking, fitness, pool, rest. on site, internet access. Any idea what this is? 3* $83 night for 2A/2C
thereuare Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 The Comfort Suites is about 1.5 miles to Newark Penn Station, and while i dont' know if the hotel provides shuttle service (nothing on their website suggests they do) i do know this is NOT an area you'd want to make this walk... especially at nite. If you do decide to book this property please note in our support page we're an affiliate of the Comfort Suites and please use our link to book.HOTWIRE does work very well... relative to conventionally booked rates, which means that you can't always expect to get a $120 hotel room when hotel direct rates are 2x-3x that amount.Could you potentially stretch your budget to $169/nite?How are you arriving to the NYC area? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.PS- for help with Philadelphia please post in the Pennsylvania Hotwire section of the board. dahammer Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 The Comfort Suites is about 1.5 miles to Newark Penn Station, and while i dont' know if the hotel provides shuttle service (nothing on their website suggests they do) i do know this is NOT an area you'd want to make this walk... especially at nite.I stayed here recently and would not recommend it, the entire property is fenced in and I would not feel comfortable walking outside of the fence at night. Close is a relative term, the hotel provides a shuttle to the Newark Airport, it is $10 per person each way. I don't know if they offer a shuttle to the PATH station.HOTWIRE has a 3* for $106 in Secaucus Meadowlands with the following amenities: Restaurant, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business; these match the Holiday Inn in Secaucus.
New at This Posted September 29, 2009 Author Report Posted September 29, 2009 My husband and I are driving, our boys are meeting us the next day by Amtrak to Newark. I called the hotel and they told me we could get a shuttle to Penn. Station to get into the city.
thereuare Posted September 29, 2009 Report Posted September 29, 2009 Does this mean that the hotel provides a shuttle (free? pay? frequency?) of that there is a bus/shuttle along the highway in front of the hotel that you can take down the road to Newark Penn Station?Since you're driving the Secaucus that dahammer mentions is an option as well (as is the Meadowlands-East Rutherford area)... some of the hotels in this area have bus service right at the door of the hotel (or a block away) but there are a handful which are a bit of a hike to a bus, but as long as you have a car, your back-up plan could be to drive to the local Park N Ride and take the bus from there. As well, this area is not that easy to get to from EWR via mass transit, whichi which is nother reason i asked about if you'd be driving.Basically it comes down to budget vs. covnenience... if you want to stay at the Newark property above for $125/nite, or for another $35/nite you could have the convenience of Jersey City and litteraly walking to the PATH train in under 5 minutes... or for even less look at Secaucus/East Rutherford/Meadowlands where you'd be traveling by bus to the city (this last zone also offers free parking, whereas Jersey City would not)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.
