twaliwali Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Hello ...Brand new member of this board, have spent hours reading some of the great posts/advice. Thank you for this valuable service ...Need some advice - I have seen some amazing rates (around $120 or so) come through (as reported here) for 4* NYC hotels in September and October. I am specifically interested in the Hilton New York (MTW) and Grand Hyatt New York (MTE).Is it possible to provide advice on bidding strategies for the best chances to snag one of these for Oct 23/24 around the same price?I am travelling with my wife and two small children, and want to be sure we can get a room big enough for all of us.Will report on success when I start bidding, and will use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links in this forum.Thank you for your help ....
thereuare Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Welcome to BetterBidding! There is no way to target a specific hotel with PRICELINE and i think a price around $120 for a 4* hotel for these dates would be a bit ambitious. Ultimately it's up to you, but we really don't recommend using PRICELINE for more than double occupancy in NYC as there are just too many rooms that only have one bed and/or can't accomodate quad occupancy... HOTWIRE is a better option as you can search for up to quad occupancy and ensure sleeping accomodations for everyone in your family, although it will cost you a little bit more than PRICELINE.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. twaliwali Posted September 6, 2009 Author Report Posted September 6, 2009 Thanks ... glad to be here.Would love your thoughts on both scenarios if possible. Totally understand you can't target a specific hotel via Priceline, but saw some amazing wins I was hoping to replicate. With the larger chains/newer buildings, thought there would be a better chance of getting a room large enough. The Roosevelt has been coming up a lot, and I know that's an older bldg, so it may be challenging to get a large enough room (though the hotel website indicates they can handle it).Looking forward to sharing my (hopefully) successful bid ....
dahammer Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Roosevelt has been coming up a lot, and I know that's an older bldg, so it may be challenging to get a large enough room (though the hotel website indicates they can handle it).Looking forward to sharing my (hopefully) successful bid ....the hotel may have quad rooms, but may hold them for guests paying rack rate, this is a risky strategy. You may want to check out HOTWIRE for your dates, post the amenities and star rating in this thread and we will attempt to identify.

You can certainly try, and we'll try to help with however you decide to book, but i'd be very surprised if you're successful for a 4* hotel around $120/nite... but i do think you're taking on quite a bit of risk if you decide to use PRICELINE for this stay. What is the best rate you're able to find at an acceptable hotel for quad occupancy? Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. twaliwali Posted September 7, 2009 Author Report Posted September 7, 2009 Thanks all for your feedback and help.Per the earlier post, here are two that look interesting on Hotwire, though still a bit high for my budget.3* Midtown East $279 - Suite, Fitness, Restaurant, High-Speed Internet, Kitchenette.4* Midtown Central $239 - No Smoking, Fitness, Restaurant, Business Centre, High-Speed Internet3* Times Square $236 - No Smoking, Restaurant, Business Centre, High-Speed InternetAlso, I'm not averse to going below a 4* on Priceline - my main concerns are budget ($120-$150 ideally) - I would take my chances on a big enough room, but would ideally like something that would be more likely to faciliate (a newer hotel, major chain) vs. an older building. Most I've said hotels do their best to help out.If there is a suggestion on an ideal bidding strat around my budget for those dates, pls. let me know.Your help is appreciated, I've already used the links ....

Most I've said hotels do their best to help out.As noted above, you can't target a specfic hotel with PRICELINE, so similarly there is no way to target a htoel that is newer, has larger rooms, a major chain, etc.If you're willing to accept the risk and want to try bidding on PRICELINE, let us know which zone(s) you're willing to accept at the 4* level (assuming this is where you'd like to start) and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. twaliwali Posted September 9, 2009 Author Report Posted September 9, 2009 Hi there ...This is a two parter for staying 10/23 - 10/25 w/2 Adults & 2 Kids.:I've selected 2 Adults & 2 Kids in Hotwire before the options come up. 1. Can you help me identify the following:$229 MTC 4* - No Smoking, Fitness, Restaurant, Business Centre, HSIA$224 Chelsea/MSG 3* - Breakfast, Fitness, Restaurant, Business Centre, HSIA (I think this is the Wingate)$232 Chelsea/MSG 2.5* - Breakfast, Fitness, Restaurant, Business Centre, HSIA2. If I've selected 2 Adults & 2 Kids as occupants, I assume this means the prices/hotels/options available include a room that will hold all 4 of us - Thoughts?Reason I ask is I called Hotwire 1-800 number, and they said they don't guarantee room configuration, and that I'd need to call the hotel directly. But if I'm selecting 2 Adults/2 Kids, it would make sense they would provide a room for all of us (and not have to argue when we arrive). As advised, don't want to risk this on PRICELINE.Thanks!
AaronJB Posted September 9, 2009 Report Posted September 9, 2009 HOTWIRE guarantees a room with bedding for 4 if you do search for 2/2. However, that could mean two beds or something like 1 + 1 sofabed. It guarantees a room that will hold 4, but it doesn't guarantee exactly how it will do so/configuration.The 4* MTC is likely the Sheraton, while the 3* Chelsea is likely the Wingate. Unfortunately, not sure what the 2.5* is.Please use the site's HOTWIRE link to start your purchase.
