Priceline Hotel: 3* Newark-Meadowlands (Secaucus-North Bergen) Hyatt Place

Hi all,

My gf and I will be visiting NYC for a little holiday from 10/4 to 10/8 via Newark Airport, and I'd like some advice on where I should stay.

The two biggest considerations for me are 1) price and 2) safety. If I were by myself I wouldn't mind a sketchier place, but that's not going to be reasonable with my gf.

I've looked at three main areas, and I was wondering if I could get feedback on those areas, as well as other places that I might not have considered. They are:

1. Newark Airport - ~$50/night, so it's cheap. I suppose we'd have to take a taxi to Penn Station to take the PATH to NYC. The things I'm concerned about is I've heard the Penn Station area is sketchy at night, and the extra time/expense involved getting to NYC. Maybe there's another hotel in Newark that's cheap and close to the PATH?

2. Brookyn (Holiday Inn Express?) - ~$50/night, also cheap. It's cheap, and fairly close to NYC. The only thing that I'm concerned about is that I've heard it's also sketchy in Brooklyn at night. Would a cab straight to the hotel be cheap in order to stay safe?

3. JFK Airport - $50-70 - also fairly cheap. I'm a little concerned about the commute to/from NYC, and I don't know enough about the area.

Should I stick with one of these options, or is there anything else that I've overlooked. As I mentioned, if possible, something $80/night or less since I'm staying for 4 consecutive nights.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Honestly, i don't like any of the options above... admittedly i'm not that familiar with this part of Brooklyn, but for reasons you've cited, i'm not a fan of most of Brooklyn. (and it doesn't give me that 'warm and fuzzy' feeling)

EWR is close geographically but a big time waster getting access to mass transit into the city, and JFK is just to far out.

I would look towards the Rutherford, Meadowlands, Secaucus, North Bergen zones via HOTWIRE and see if you can 'select' a hotel that is close to a bus stop... there are many hotels that have NYC busses litteraly right at their doorstep and will have you into the city in ~25 minutes; but be aware many of these busses stop running between 1am-2am, so not sure how late you would intend on staying out. This wouldn't be the ideal location, but given your budget, it would be the best of the options, imo.

Hey thereuare,

Thanks for the advice! First made a bid on Priceline for a 3.5* in Secaucus for $60, got rejected, so I re-bid including 3* and got accepted by the Hyatt Place Secaucus! Definitely much cheaper than staying in NY, especially once it's multiplied by 4 nights.

Now the only thing to find out is if they have a bus right directly from the hotel to NYC...

Hi Jeff,

The bus is NJ Transit #320 and is right out the back door, the hotel desk will help you as many tourists stay here. Roundtrip is $6.30 and the drivers break up to a $20 bill. Be advised the trip takes longer at rush hour in the morning.

You really don't need a car if all you plan on doing is going into the city. Not sure if there is an airport shuttle, but a car service may be cheaper than renting a car to get to the hotel.

the HOV lane into the Lincoln Tunnel for busses is in effect until 10:00 am, so if can time your departure right, the trip can take as little as 25 minutes.
