MicheleD Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Having difficulties finding something decent under $150 in Manhattan. Should I consider Long Island City or Jersey City? Have to get to JFK afterwards.Don't mind a bit artistic/industrial area as long as it's safe.Thank you !
thereuare Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 What time is your flight depart from JFK? (or more specifically, what time do you want to be at the aiprort for your return flight home) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
MicheleD Posted August 25, 2009 Author Report Posted August 25, 2009 We are flying on to Boston to do a little trip of New England and then flight back to Brussels is from Boston. Was thinking of taking the 5.30 pm flight on JetBlue.
thereuare Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 You know from your previous thread that i'm partial to the Jersey City area... you would have a few options to get to JFK from Jersey City (depending upon budget vs. convenience):1) taxi from Jersey City (~$65 + toll)2) PATH to Downtown Manhattan then taxi (Path $1.75/pp + taxi ~$45)3) PATH to midtown Manhattan then AirTrain to JFK (PATH $1.75/pp + AirTrain to JFK ~$12/pp)4) PATH to Manhattan then Subway to JFK (PATH $1.75/pp + subway $2.25/pp) <-- subway ride is LONGAt the moment i don't see anything in Manhattan within your budget. The 4* hotels in the Jersey City area are all well reviewed. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. These are promotional fares and require a 14 day advance purchase.by taking the train, you will save travel time and cost to JFK as well as from Boston Logan airport into the city.
thereuare Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 And if you're really on a budget you can take the bus, goes express from NYC to Boston and fares can be had for as little as $1 each way and top out at ~$30 or so. MicheleD Posted August 26, 2009 Author Report Posted August 26, 2009 Hi all,Thanks for your suggestions. But...- Alamo has a great weekend deal for cars from Logan Airport: just $20/day, so we wanted to head straight out of Boston upon our arrival at the airport. In comparison, from downtown the same car is 3 to 4 times more expensive. Also, by going out straight away we don't need to pay an expensive night in Boston. This is also why we're not renting in NY and returning to Boston (for which we would have to take airport rental locations anyway).- On the 24th, we want to stay as long as possible in NY. Am even considering taking the 10pm flight to Boston (as rental agencies there are open all night, downtown they are not). It's $84 pp, so savings on the train not really worth it.- Time is more of a constraint than budget. That's why I prefer to have a cheaper hotel and save on travel time.Or is there something I am missing?Thank you !
thereuare Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 Based upon your travel itinerary i dont' think you're missing anything. The other suggestions were just alternate options, but do realize that on this route flying does not save you that much time vs train (or bus) once you consider needing to arrive x minutes before check-in time, security lines, etc.If you did arrive via train or bus you could take the T to the airport, but if you arrive very late the train may stop running at that hour, leaving you with the expense of a taxi (which could potentially be worth it if the savings on bus/train vs flying are enough to offset cab fare and still leave some savings). Less convenient since you won't be landing directly at the airport, but you'll have to weigh any cost benefit vs. convenience. For instance, if you're not above bus travel, the 9:30pm depature from NYC to Boston on 9/24 is only $2/pp at MegaBus.com. So if the flight is $84/pp, is the $160+ savings worth bus travel and having to take a taxi to the airport from the bus station? (i'm not sure if the Silver Line runs at 2am when you would be scheduled to arrive in Boston)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. MicheleD Posted August 27, 2009 Author Report Posted August 27, 2009 Thank you for all your advice. I will consider all of it carefully. In the mean time I found a reasonably priced ($129) B&B in the Mount Morris neighbourhood of Harlem, which gets good Tripadvisor reviews. Am tempted to take that one rather than another chain hotel through PRICELINE or HOTWIRE. I am quite a B&B person anyway and this neighbourhood seems to be ok, so would like to give it a try.

thereuare Posted August 27, 2009 Report Posted August 27, 2009 I wouldn't stay in Harlem. While some areas are safer than others (i don't anything about this particular area), if you intend to ride the subway back at nite you ride with the entire community.
