My husband is looking forward to his first visit to Saratoga Springs for Travers Stakes at the racetrack there. I had no idea how hard it would be to get a reasonably priced room for the dates of his stay.

After bidding 20+ times going up to $100 for the Saratoga Springs area, I decided he would have to commute from Albany.

We ended up getting Hotel Indio Albany-Latham for $86 per night.

I think part of the difficulty is due to the race (i'm not familiar with this race but since your husband is making the trip i assume it draws a crowd from 'all over' and many of these people need a place to stay) which increases hotel occupancy, as well as the fact that there just aren't many hotels in this area. So with high occupancy, and little competition, there isn't any pressing reason for hotels to offer the opaque suppliers deeply discounted rates.

This is the biggest race of the year at the Saratoga track. It's a pretty big deal. All the hotels in Saratoga will likely sell out. In fact, many locals rent out their houses for this weekend. Saratoga will feel like all of Westchester moved upstate for the race. :)

The commute from the Indigo will be just about the easiest you can make from Albany. Easy to get onto the highway, fast driving to Saratoga. However, traffic within Saratoga will be insane and the track is several miles from the highway, so he should allow plenty of time.
