padfly Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 so priceline says that all rooms will accomodate 2 adults comfortably, ie"1 double 1 king 1 queen 2 doubles 2 twins"we will be travelling with our kids (two teenagers) and would prefer 2 beds, ideally doubles.in your experience, have you ever gotten bookings with a single bed? is the hotel flexible in dealing with this?in a more general sense, do hotels have allocations of "less desirable" rooms for priceliners?i assume this would also be a consideration for two people travelling together who are not, er ... "bed compatible".EdJ
WillTravel Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 I think this has the potential to be a problem in San Francisco (or other high-density cities). There are a lot of threads here about the subject. But people who have bid for a 4* hotel in the USE or USW zones seem to have done fine in this respect, to my recollection. If you bid at a lower quality level, you might get a boutique hotel where the number of beds could very definitely be a problem.
thereuare Posted September 20, 2004 Report Posted September 20, 2004 Padfly,Welcome to BetterBidding! As WillTravel suggested... it really depends upon the city/town. If you are looking at Orlando i'd say 'no problem'... if looking at NYC i'd say it's somewhat of a risk. Perhaps others that know San Francisco better would be able to say how much of a risk it is to ensure accomodations for four... but given real estate prices there i'd guess that many hotel rooms are smaller than average. Exactly which zone(s) in San Francisco were you planning on bidding? In a recent development Hotwire now allows users to designate '2 adults and 2 children' and will guarantee accomodations for the 4 of you. Here are some related posts (keep in mind all of these were written before Hotwire allowed purchasing for 2 adults and 2 children):Bed Size and NumberFour In A RoomQUAD OCCUPANCY Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
padfly Posted September 21, 2004 Author Report Posted September 21, 2004 thanks for all the help & suggestions!ok - so here's how it went down ...i used the usual zone tricks to lowball $70 for a 4* hotel in USE and work my way up. eventually got my offer of $90 accepted at the hilton (USW) for 1 night (friday, sep 24 - we will catch the lion king show at the orpheum, stay overnight and then head back to the south bay on saturday, sep 25).the best rate available from the hilton was $169. from hotwire there was a 4* in USW for $113, which sounds like the hiltonthen called the hotel and requested 2 dbl beds in the room - they have taken the request, but as everyone pointed out, there are no guarantees.i'll probably hedge my bets and carry a sleeping bag with me 8-).
thereuare Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Congratulations on your win! These REVIEWS make it seem that the staff is accomodating and will try to honor your bedding preference. It also helps if you check-in early in the afternoon... early enough that guests that are leaving have checked-out but not so late that the rooms have been cleaned but have not yet been assigned.Let us know how everything goes and enjoy your stay, thanks for sharing it with the rest of us. Mosi Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 I have stayed at the Hilton before through a priceline win. 2 Beds wasn't a problem. The only time I have been in SF and not been assigned to a room w. 2 beds was when I landed at the Stanford Court on Nob Hill.
padfly Posted September 26, 2004 Author Report Posted September 26, 2004 ok; had a fine stay at the hilton, night of 9/24points to note:+ got a room on the 10th floor, tower 1+ got two double beds, as requested+ did NOT get the impression at all that being a priceliner was a disadvantage+ clean, well appointed room, 4* rating is justifiedhilton via priceline recommended.other points:+ neighborhood to the south/west is a bit dodgy, esp from a "family perspective", e.g. urban blight, XXX clubs, loitering, etc.+ going east, its an easy walk to Powell St/Union Sq. & BARTthanks for the help.
