Priceline Hotel: What am I doing wrong?

I tried priceline for a hotel in San Diego (Downtown San Diego/Harbor Island), 2 1/2 star hotel for $50. Rejected. So, I bidded $60 for a two star hotel. Rejected. What am I doing wrong? Am I bidding too early? My trip isn't for another month. I checked other users on here and they have 2 1/2 star hotels for $40.

These two articles might help explain it:

In short, with those types of occupancy figures, it will be hard to get a centrally located cheap deal on Priceline.

Would you consider other zones or raising your price? What is available on Hotwire for your dates? (What are your dates?)

It's reasonably close. Will you be renting a car when there? We took the bus a few times and took a cab a couple times, and had no problem. The trams in the Old Town area also go straight into downtown. I also enjoyed seeing the Old Town historical area. It's probably best to look at a map and see if you're comfortable with the location. However, I personally think the Old Town area is preferable without a car to the Downtown/Harbor Island area, because of the high odds of getting a hotel near the airport. If you have a car, either area would be fine.
