Priceline Hotel: looking for 3.5-4* in San Francisco 5/6/09-5/10/09

I have a reservation for $79/night @ the Harbour Court ($273 incl tax), but it's only for 5/7-5/10. 5/6 is at $210 there right now but I'm not going to pay that considering our flight doesn't get in until after 11 that night.

The HC is a good deal, but it would be nice to stay in the same place the whole trip.

Hotwire is showing (for the 4 nights):

3* @ $119

4.5 @ $129

3.5 @ $149

I'm looking to find something at least similar to the HC at around that price preferably in the Financial - Embarcardero area (Union Sq considered). It it doesn't work out, we'll use PL and get a room near SFO the first night.

where should I start?

Links used for my searches, if that helps!

Thanks for your help!

4 nights at Harbor Court vs. 4 nights on Hotwire:

Harbor Court: ($79 x 3) + $210 = $447

Hotwire: $119 x 4 = $476

Four nights at Harbor Court is cheaper than HOTWIRE, even with that $210 night, and no Hotwire transaction fees.

Do you want to try and beat that $447 total on PRICELINE? If so which zones are acceptable?

My hope is to get something for 4 nights for around the same nightly fee that I have reserved at the Harbour Court....so around $79 x 4, though I would go a little higher if that's not realistic (I thought it would be considering what HC is charging).

I would prefer Ebarcadero/financial dist, but Union Sq E looks like it would work also. I've never been to SFO but from what I understand those areas would be very convenient considering we have such a short time to see what we can of a city that has so much.

From what I can see both areas have plenty of 4* options, though honestly I prefer funky boutique hotels over corporate/business class mega hotels.

The Harbor Court is the Boutique type hotel you want, and it's in the area you want. How do you feel about staying near the airport your first night and keeping your $79 reservation at Harbor Court the last three nights?

If your plane doesn't land until after 11pm you may not get Downtown until after 1am. Is it worth $210 to you, plus parking if you're driving, for that short a time? You can probably get a good hotel at the airport in the $40's or $50's on Priceline.

If you can beat or match $79 for four nights Downtown on Priceline I don't think it will be by much...probably less than $10/night. Even bidding 3* (which most Boutique properties are now rated) there's a good chance you'll get upgraded to 4*, which might be one of the "corporate/business class mega hotels" you prefer less.

We're not driving so parking isn't an issue. And no, it is not worth $210 for that short night, but it is worth $79, which is what I would like to pay on average for all 4 nights. Again, if that doesn't work out, we'll keep our HC reservation at $79/night and get a PL room by the airport that first night, but not having the the hassle of changing hotels the enxt morning (and fighting traffic to get there) is worth more than the $40-50 difference. Our time is somewhat limited - we really only that day and the next to see SFO as we will be on a boat the entire 3rd day.

The King George Hotel is on Expedia for your four nights at $71 for a queen or $83 for a king. This is an older boutique type hotel, probably a step down from Harbor Court in polish, but very centrally located near Union Square. King George is NOT a 3.5* or 4*, but it's one of the better rated properties in your price range. Check the reviews on TripAdvisor to see if it's an option for you.

The Prescott is on Expedia for $109.85. That's also a boutique style hotel in USW and Priceline rates it 4*. Four nights there would be about the same total as the lower rated Harbor Court (but the Prescott is in USW and you said you prefer Embarcadero).

IMHO - If you're flying in late, you'll save a lot of money by staying near the airport the first night. You won't really miss anything, because it's so late anyway. Then you can take BART into the city, which means you won't fight traffic at all. Almost all hotels have shuttles to the airport/BART, so it's pretty cheap and easy.

Often, a 4 * near the airport can be had for 60 or so - they Hyatt has a great workout room but the muffins are expensive.

As a regular traveler to SF, that's what I'd do, then you can just stay in the HC for the great rate you have the rest of your trip.

Thanks for mentioning BART, Gallus50. I don't know if you planned on BARTing into the city, wanderlustre5280, but if you were keep in mind that BART only runs til midnight. If you miss the last train the cabfare to Downtown is around $40-50. BART fare from SFO to Embarcadero is $5.35.

I stayed at the King George a few years ago. It was fine for the price I paid (I think it was $55), but I wasn't really impressed. It is west of Union Square, in the Tenderloin. There was a fair amount of street noise during the night and a lot of panhandlers around (not the most comfortable area at night). The rooms were REALLY small, and adequate but not nice. Service was non-existent, and they messed up our reservation on top of it all...tho it all came out ok in the end.

I've also stayed at the Harbour Court, which was lovely. The rooms there were small as well, but beautifully appointed. Hotel staff was wonderful. The Embarcadero location wasn't my favorite; I prefer USE. But the hotel was GREAT!

I'd second the suggestion to stay at SFO the first night and BART into the city early in the morning.
