Mrfireman Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I am new here and the info I have found is fantastic!! My wife will be travelling to San Fran April 24-28 for her first trip to the area and we can't figure out where would be best for her to stay. We though USE and have made many offers on Priceline with no luck. We would like to be around the $100/night or less mark for a 4 star and have noticed here people are having luck. What I am wondering is if someone can give advice as far as the best place for a first time tourist looking to use the MUNI, quiet and not tiny sized room and in a safe area. From waht we read, USE and USW seem to be best but we can't decide between the two. Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section.
Colfax Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 Welcome to BetterBidding, Mrfireman.Priceline offers 4* bidding in four Downtown zones: USE, USW-Nob Hill, SOMA-Moscone, and Financial District-Emabarcadero. Repeat visitors to SF usually find one or two zones they prefer over the others, based on personal tastes and preferences. But all four zones have their advocates who would say that zone is "the best". For a first-time visitor who isn't familiar with SF though I think any of the four zones is good. The four zones together are a fairly compact area and whichever zone you stay in over four days you're probably going to visit the other three. The more zones you open yourself up to the more likely you are to find the best available 4* deal.So far you've only bid in USE. That's a popular zone due to its proximity to Union Square. But only 2 of the 20 reported 4* hotels in Downtown SF are in Priceline's USE zone---the Westin St Francis and Grand Hyatt. Bidding that one zone you do limit your options somewhat, as compared to bidding in USW, where there are nine reported 4* hotels. Still Westin and Hyatt in USE are active Priceline participants and some bidders are willing to pay more to stay in USE, even if the best 4* deal might be in one of the other zones.Rates aren't high for your dates. Hotwire has a 4* in USW for $89. Usually you can win a 4* on Priceline for less than Hotwire's rate. Hotwire also has a 4.5* in Embarcadero for $109 and a 4* for $98. You might be able to get a 4* in the $75-90 range on Priceline if you're willing to bid more zones than USE then. But April is far away in Priceline terms. If you prefer USE over the other zones you have enough time keep bidding to $100 there, every few days, and see if Priceline gets inventory in USE, before you need to bid less preferred zones. We're happy to provide strategy whichever way you choose to go. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links when you purchase.
Colfax Posted February 27, 2009 Report Posted February 27, 2009 I see a couple of good deals on Expedia:Le Meridien is $98.40 for your dates with 21-days advance purchase. And the Palace Hotel is $110.40.Le Meridien is in PRICELINE's Embarcadero zone and the Palace is in SOMA-Moscone.
witraveler Posted March 5, 2009 Report Posted March 5, 2009 For a first time visitor, especially a woman traveling alone, I wouldn't recommend USW. The Hilton there is a few blocks into the Tenderloin district which is not the most pleasant in the City. I'd tend to stick with USE or Embarcadero. (I'm not really familiar with the current south of Market area, so I can't really comment on that.)
kelley21 Posted March 9, 2009 Report Posted March 9, 2009 New here- can you tell me what PRICELINE zones the Mark Hopkins and the Huntington are in? How about HOTWIRE?thanksKelley
