SoCalTrophyWife Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 Hello there, I'm new here and hope that I am posting in the right place. I'm also brand new to using PRICELINE and I have a question before I start bidding.... I'm looking to stay in the Downtown Gaslamp area in San Diego, I will be bidding on a 4* category and I have noticed that some of the 4* hotels are really nice like, the US Grant Hotel, The Solamar, The W, and the Hilton Gaslamp and then there are some 4* hotels that are just okay like the Marriott and the so-called 4* Sheraton Hotel and Marina which normally goes for only $80-90 ? So I was wondering would bidding over $120 help me to get one the nicer 4* hotels or could I still end up getting the just 'okay' so-called 4* ? Thank You :)
SoCalTrophyWife Posted February 8, 2009 Author Report Posted February 8, 2009 So first off I realized that I did not post in the correct forum but instead posted this in the Hotwire forum....oops.But I used your link to HOTWIRE and I matched up the icons on Hotwire with your lists of hotel amenities and I think I can tell which Hotel is which. (hopefully) I notice that HOTWIRE seem to be a bit more expensive than PRICELINE but with Hotwire it seems more transparent to which hotel it probably is, and also the fact that you can narrow it down to the Gaslamp district or Downtown and with Priceline you have to want to stay in Harbor Island as well. BetterBidding.com is awesome !
thereuare Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 Welcome to BetterBidding!Your assumptions above are correct... PRICELINE is usually a little cheaper than HOTWIRE, but with HOTWIRE you can often target a specific property, or at the very least know the amenities that are offered; so that is trade-off between the two services. Each defines the boundaries of their zones differently, so it's not the case that HOTWIRE's zones are always smaller, but it just so happens that in this instance, for San Diego, HOTWIRE divides the Gaslamp and Downtown areas into two separate zones, while PRICELINE combines them into one larger zone. It's usually not recommended to bid higher in hopes of a 'better' hotel as you could just as easily end up at one of the lower end properties within the star category and pay too much for it (as per this thread: Don't Bid Higher For a Specific Property)Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we will advise accordingly. (if HOTWIRE, feel free to post the dates of your stay and the amenities that are shown to be associated with the hotel being offered and we'll try to confirm your guess as to the hotel being offered)Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. SoCalTrophyWife Posted February 9, 2009 Author Report Posted February 9, 2009 Thank you, I am using the HOTWIRE link that you have provided. I find Hotwire being the safer route, as I do not want to stay in certain hotels in the Harbor area.I assume that this listing is for the US Grant Hotel in S.D. ?4.5* ($183)Location:Downtown - Harbor IslandFitness Center Restaurant(s) High-speed Internet Access Trip Advisor: 4.5 out of 5Based on 100+ customer reviews And I also have a stupid question, I'm rather young and naive when it comes to Valet parking. The hotels in the area charge around $32 for Valet parking. Now is that for 24 hours ? Or would I be paying that fee twice because my car would be there when I check in on Saturday and when I check out the next day on Sunday ? And I can leave through the day and not have to pay each time I come and go right ? Sorry, I hope I have worded this clearly enough.Thank you for all the help and I will definitely pass this wonderful site around to my family and friends :)
thereuare Posted February 9, 2009 Report Posted February 9, 2009 Yes, best guess is that the above is the US Grant. The valet fee is per 24 hours and usually allows for "in and out" privleges", which is the term for being allowed to come and go as many times as you'd like within the 24 hour period.Thank you in advance for using our HOTWIRE link.Let us know how it goes or if we can be of further help. SoCalTrophyWife Posted February 13, 2009 Author Report Posted February 13, 2009 After the help I received here, identifying the 4.5* in the Downtown/Harbor Island-San Diego, I continued on and used Better Bidding's HOTWIRE link where I successfully booked the hotel I wanted, the US Grant! I've seen a winning bid on here for $17 lower but I did not want to take the risk on losing out on this hotel for only saving $17.HotwireLocation: Downtown - Harbor Island 4.5* ($183)Amenities: Fitness Center, Restaurant(s), High-speed Internet AccessThank you Better Bidding !
