Probably could have started lower with MTE zone but didn't expect to see a such a low winning bid given the two $140 winning bids around these dates in MTE. Anyway, good win, can't complain for $125 per night at the Barclay especially this time of the year. It'll be my girlfriends first time in NYC - any recommendations on must try restaurants or sightseeing spots? I've only been to the city once and didn't have much time for enjoyment. Anything nearby the Barclay? I've browsed Better Bidding a few times and finally registered - love the forum! Thanks!
thereuare Posted December 6, 2008 Report Posted December 6, 2008 Welcome to BetterBidding!Congratulations on your win and thank you for sharing your results with the board. Glad to see you're happy with the results.Near this hotel is my often recommended Ess-A-Bagel (Third Ave at 51st St) which has one of the best bagels in the city and makes for a good, inexpensive, breakfast in the morning among local NYers. You can also try to be a "local" by eating from the (famous within a given circle) Chicken and Rice food cart at Sixth Ave at 53rd (NOTE: 7:30pm-4:00am... it's the one on the SW side of the street (don't go to the others) and you can see them in action at this video)There are some other food suggestions in our WIKI so you can look there for some suggestions too, and feel free to ask me any questions you have or if there is something in particular you're looking for, as i'm local to the area. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases.Enjoy your stay. Mr_Conlin Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Wow. That is a great deal. Thereuare, have you seen this property at this price this low recently? I remember getting this property for around $140 in 2002, but never below! Interesting...
thereuare Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 This is a new "recent low"... we have seen some ~$140 wins at this particular property recently, but $125 seems to be the lowest in the last few years. I think NYC (as well as the rest of the country) is starting to feel the pain from the recent economic conditions... NYC had been holding up well when the dollar was weak as it became relatively inexpensive for international tourists to come to NYC; however, the dollar has since rebounded (i think, don't really watch this too closely) and now there aren't too many international visitors to make up for the slowdown in business travel. We've even recently seen some sub-$100 wins at 3.5* properties in NYC. I would suspect that that deals in NYC will continue thru at least mid-March, as this is historically a slow time in NYC. After mid-March, we'll see if the economy is on the rebound or not and if hotel prices rise as a result (although i suspect there will also likely be a bit of a lag between the economy rebounding and the rise in hotel prices)More info that you asked, but those are my current thoughts which i thought i'd share. Colfax Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 For 12/20 alone I won the Barclay at $140 after $135 was rejected. For 12/20-12/24 heyqqqq won the Barclay for $125. heyqqqq and I posted our wins just a few hours apart. That doesn't necessarily mean we bid near the same time. But if we did bid near the same time it suggests the Barclay offers a discounted rate for multi-day stays on PRICELINE? Is that possible? If it's not a discount for multi-day stays then the Barclay lowered its PRICELINE rate in the hours or days between when I bid and when heyqqqq did.
thereuare Posted December 8, 2008 Report Posted December 8, 2008 Hotel direct rates are lower for 12/20 vs. 12/20-12/24... so the lower hotel direct rates probably equates to a lower threshold for an accepted PRICELINE bid.
