Bruce Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Hotwire lists the amenities as Breakfast, Shuttle and Internet. When you click on continue it gives you the details and says it has a Tripadvisor rating of 3 of 5 with 60+ reviews, with the latest being October, 2008. The Comfort Inn, Jamaica has a 3 rating - but only 16 Reviews (and I wouldn't want to stay here). The Sheraton also has a 3 rating, but I'm sure this wouldn't be a 2* Hotwire Hotel and it also only has 12 reviews. Any other ideas? Could they round down 3.5 ratings? The 2 1/2* hotel (Which I assume to be the Ramada Plaza) has a 1.5 trip advisor rating. Any help would be appreciated. I need a room with 2 beds, otherwise I would give Priceline a try.
slick_gd Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 Based on the tripadvisor traveler rating you give, the one hotel that I have found that matches is the Red Carpet Inn with a 3/5 rating based on 71 reviews. That would be my guess. If you plan on reserving, help support this site by using this HOTWIRE link to start your purchase and let the board know the result.

Bruce Posted November 17, 2008 Author Report Posted November 17, 2008 The Red Carpet Inn isn't within the JFK Zone, is it? It also doesn't say that it offers Shuttle service to the airport. My dates of stay are 11/26-11/28. And like I always do, I will use the HOTWIRE Link from the better bidding pages.
slick_gd Posted November 17, 2008 Report Posted November 17, 2008 You're right. I may have jumped the gun earlier. Although the Red Carpet Inn matches the rating it is not in the zone. Here is where it gets a little tricky. There is no hotel in the JFK zone that exactly matches the tripadvisor rating of 3/5 based on 60+ reviews, however, the Days Inn is the closest with 3.5/5 based on 64 reviews. The reason I think it could be the Days Inn is that the very latest review was a 5/5 which could have been enough to tip the rating up to 3.5 from 3 seeing as how there are a relatively few amount of reviews. It also matches the 2* rating and the amenities of internet, free breakfast, and a shuttle (which is a surcharge at this location). The Days Inn would be my guess. If you plan on reserving, help support this site by using this HOTWIRE link to start your purchase and let the board know the result.
thereuare Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 Before looking at the above further, can i ask the purpose of your stay? If you're looking to stay in the JFK area as a cheap alterative to NYC and commuting in it's really not that convenient or worthwhile, imo... are you intending to use this area to commute to Manhattan or do you have reason to stay in this zone? Thanks for using our PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links. Bruce Posted November 18, 2008 Author Report Posted November 18, 2008 We're spending 3 nights in the city at the NY Hilton. We're doing family stuff on Thursday (Thanksgiving) - and actually JFK is the most convenient place for where they live. Then we have an early morning flight on Friday.I made a reservation at the Sheraton JFK. It's only 7,000 points per night, so I may stick with that."The reason I think it could be the Days Inn is that the very latest review was a 5/5 which could have been enough to tip the rating up to 3.5 from 3 seeing as how there are a relatively few amount of reviews."Don't you think the TripAdvisor ratings would be linked from that website so any changes would be reflected in the HOTWIRE site?
thereuare Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 The TripAdvisor review information shown on HOTWIRE's website is not dynamic and only updated preiodically (i've seen as quick as 2-3 weeks or as long as 6-7 weeks)... so the information can often be 'off' depending upon the number of reviews received for a given hotel and/or how long since the last update. We're spending 3 nights in the city at the NY Hilton. If you made this purchase thru PRICELINE or HOTWIRE please share your win with the board as a NEW TOPIC. (if you booked direct please note in our support page that we're an affiliate of the Hilton as well as most major hotel chains and booking agencies... please use our links for your hotel direct purchases)It's only 7,000 points per nightNot sure how many points you have or how you value them, but most value a point at least .02, which would make these nites a $140 value... not sure just how much time you'll be spending with family, but if you would have any free time away from family for these two nites (and don't need to make trips back and forth more than once) i would consider staying in the city for the additional two nites where i think (haven't researched it yet) you could get a 3.5* or better for less than $140/nite.Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. Bruce Posted November 18, 2008 Author Report Posted November 18, 2008 Sorry, I made the Hilton Purchase through an employee family program. Once we leave the city all of our activity will be on the Island within a 10 mile radius of Kennedy. I always figure the value of my points (I have plenty) as 20,000=free coach ticket=$450, or .02125, very close to your 2 cents per point. A 3* hotel at Kennedy is $113/night (for 2 adults and 2 children) - and I have to assume it to be the Holiday Inn Express which I wouldn't call 3 stars.
dahammer Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 I always figure the value of my points (I have plenty) as 20,000=free coach ticket=$450, or .02125, very close to your 2 cents per point.since I use PRICELINE often, my point balance is insignificant, so when I consider booking a reward, I have to trade off the value of the reward night against making a conventional booking or using an opaque service such as PRICELINE or HOTWIRE. Also, redeeming points is for pleasure travel, not business, so if I use an opaque service, I have to consider the possible risk of not getting a room that will fit 4. That said, you could book this Sheraton JFK room for about $200 per night plus tax, so the value of 7000 points is closer to $.03 per point in this case. Starwood's program allows you to exchange one Starwood point for one airline mile.
