Hotwire Hotel: Suggestions for bidding to get a quality hotel

Hey everyone, My dad and I are driving to NYC on August 25th to see the Yankees beat Boston a couple of days later. I am looking for a hotel that offers free parking and would be close to public transportation so that my dad and I can go into the city during the day and return at night. I have heard that Secaucus, NJ is a good place to find cheaper, quality hotels but I don't know much about the area.

Hotwire was offering a 3.5* hotel for $90 and I am assuming that this is the Sheraton Meadowlands. Trip Advisor has some bad reviews of returning to the hotel late at night because the hotel shuttle stops providing service after 10pm. I just want a clean hotel in a relatively safe environment where my dad and I can spend the night. If you have suggestions on neighborhoods and price's to bid I would appreciate it. I am looking to spend around $100 a night.

Thanks for the help!!

the Yankees will need all of the help they can get! Can you confirm your dates of travel, is this just one night, August 25? Since you will have a car, would you consider a short drive to the NJ Transit Park and Ride in North Bergen? Since this is a special occasion with your Dad, you may also want to consider the Yankee Clipper. Its a short drive from Secaucus to Port Imperial, board a boat and sail down the Hudson river, around the tip of Manhattan, and up the East River to Yankee Stadium. Its like a floating tailgate party. The boat departs 30 minutes after the last out.

I will be arriving on Aug 25 and staying until Aug 28 (the game is on the 27th) so I will be staying for three nights. I am not opposed to driving to catch a ferry if parking is safe and relatively inexpensive. The Yankee Clipper sounds like a neat idea and it is something I had not heard of. Thanks for the tips and let me know if you think that a stay at the Sheraton Meadowlands with a short trip to the Park and Ride is the best idea.

Thanks again!!

these amenities are a match for the Sheraton Meadowlands, its a great hotel and rack rates are usually in the $200 range.

I have read various reports about the shuttle, some like it, some hate it. I understand that the shuttle will drop you off at Secaucus Plaza, which is basically a bus stop in Secaucus, or take you to Secaucus Junction which is a train station (which is a drop off station, no parking is available). I have never used the hotel shuttle bus, but I would call the hotel directly to confirm the operating hours and if they will pick you up at Secaucus Junction train station late at night.

The other option is to drive over to the North Bergen Park and Ride where parking and a round trip bus fare is $8.25 with additional round trip bus fare at $4.80 (unless Dad is 62+ then the fare is $2.80 round trip) Here is a link to the Route 320 Bus and the Park and Ride.

Click on the Yankee Clipper link and you will see the cost for tickets and parking, I have never used this, but it something that I really want to try, you'll come back in the evening when the city is all lit up.

Few comments regarding the Yankee Clipper (which i've never taken)...

If budget is a concern it's fairly pricey vs. taking the subway... i'm not saying that it's not worth it, as you're paying for the experience, but it seems above that you may be on a tight budget so just know ahead of time (and parking at the Port Imperial Ferry Terminal isn't cheap either)

As dahmmer mentioned above the boat returns at set time after the last out... so if you think you may want to leave the stadium early (if the game is a blowout or the weather is bad) you're pretty much stuck there (although in an extreme case you could 'eat' the return ticket home, take the subway to Port Authority, then the bus to the Port Imperial Lot to pick up your car)

Let us know what you decide and how it goes or if we can be of further help.
