lil Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 This is such a great website that I have been reading for awhile, but now I have some questions--My husband, myself and our 2 grown children are traveling to NYC in Oct. for 1 week. To keep costs down we would like to stay in one room together(and hopefully not kill one another :) )Anyways, I'm a little nervous about bidding for a room so we found the Marriott at LGA for a great corp rate and are wondering if its really difficult to get in and out of Manhattan from LGA? We are coming into EWR @ 11:30pm and we're going to rent a car and drive to LGA. Does that seem too complicated at that time of night? Or too far? Or not safe?? We need a car to travel upstate to see friends, but we are planning on just parking it when not going out of town and using taxis or whatever. Not trying to be difficult, just need some advice. Thank you in advance!!!
dahammer Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 What are your dates of travel and what is the corporate rate for the Marriott? Also, what is the weekly rate for the car? If you're staying in LGA to reduce your hotel expenses, would you consider staying in the Jersey City area at the same rate?
lil Posted August 8, 2008 Author Report Posted August 8, 2008 Oct 11-19$125.00 hotel$234.00 carpretty good deal, huh? Rather not Jersey city, would rather one of the borroughsIs it an okay drive?
thereuare Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 The $125/nite is a good rate (i don't think you're going to come close to that in NYC) but this hotel is not near any subway line and you have to take the NYC bus to the subway and then the subway into Manhattan (and the subway only runs along 42nd St in Manhattan, so you'll need to transfer again once in Manhattan if you intend to go North or South at all)... not sure you want to be making that commute for a week. Also, note that parking is $22/day at the hotel, so you'll need to include that in your budget. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases

The trip into the city does sound a little complicated so we may bid for 2 rooms for 3-4 nights which sounds easier and use the first hotel as our homebase for all our driving trips. One more question though, what do you think of renting a car at Newark at midnite and driving to LGA? Okay or definately no and wait till next day? I would think traffic would be light and we will have a nav system. Thank you for your help.
dahammer Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 can you get as good a corporate rate at any other Marriott branded properties? The Courtyard in Jersey City would be a far better option and you could at least walk around the area in the evening, can't say that for the LGA property. You really shouldn't consider PRICELINE bidding as you have 4 in your party, HOTWIRE may be a better option as they can guarantee bedding for 4, understand that this could be a double bed and a pull out sofa bed. As far as the drive from EWR to LGA at Midnight or later, since EWR flights are just about always late, it depends on how fatigued you will be and the type of driver that you are in unfamiliar surroundings. I would do it, but I am very familiar with this area.
lil Posted August 8, 2008 Author Report Posted August 8, 2008 Can't get corp rate at Jersey City, but I can at Marriott Newark airport? Have read though that is not a very safe area? Just not sure....
thereuare Posted August 8, 2008 Report Posted August 8, 2008 I don't think there's much in either area for your to be wondering around and seeing. The advantage of a "midnite run" from EWR to LGA is no traffic... the downside is if you don't know where you're going it can be difficult to see and find your way. lil Posted August 8, 2008 Author Report Posted August 8, 2008 I'm sure we are getting a good rate because these are out of the way places and one is not probably any better than the other. We are thinking for the money saved we can take alot of taxi rides if needed i guess.Thank you for all your help!!! Much appreciated!!
