IBDP Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 I tried this on Priceline for over a week (most every day) with the same results. I finally decided to go for it and included MidTown East and Central Park South, bid in increments up to the chosen $240.00.I am not used to paying these high prices? any theories? One of mine is that throngs of Europeans and Asians are pouring into NYC; their Euros and Yen go a long way in the good old US of A. Any others?Regards,Donna
AaronJB Posted August 2, 2008 Report Posted August 2, 2008 New York has become vastly more expensive in the last five years or so. In 2003, I stayed at a very basic hotel in Midtown whose price range was generally around $100 a night. The same hotel - which, once again, is really quite basic - is now an average of about $250-300 a night. NYC hotels actually seemed a touch less expensive this year than the year prior, but rates are still astronomical. It's unfortunate, because NYC is a wonderful place and the current rates put NYC out of the price range of many. There are many cases where people could stay a week in a hotel in Chicago or Miami or somewhere else for the cost of 3-4 nights in an NYC hotel.Thank you for reporting your win! :)
thereuare Posted August 3, 2008 Report Posted August 3, 2008 NYC is always expensive... just sometimes it's a little less expensive than other times :)I think it's a combination of factors... the economy had gotten stronger from 5 years ago, and although the economy has been experiencing a slowdown for the last few months, a lot of business travel, plus conferences and events, have already been booked. As well, we are seeing a BIG increase in the number of overseas visitors... the weak dollar has put traveling to North America a good deal and many are taking advantage of it.Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. Thanks for sharing your win with the board and enjoy your stay in the city.
