dresden Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 I had a previous thread about staying near midtown but we've since decided to try and stay in Jersey city because it's more convenient for our trip. I've got the Hyatt Regency booked for 7/18 and 7/19, but it seems there is something big going on in the area for the 20th- 22nd. I've bid up to $145 for 3*, which is higher that what I've seen winning bids for on here (and I got it for $90 for the 18th and 19th). I've went down to 2.5* and bid up to $140 there too, I moved down to 2* and had $130 rejected for that. I'd be willing to go up to $160 or 170 for this zone, but I'm not sure that would get anything in Jersey City for those day anyways.Does anyone have any recommendations for these dates? We plan to pick up a car rental from the airport(EWR) on the morning of the 22nd, but we also plan to be in Manhattan on the 20th and 21st. I am not at all familiar with the area, but I am considering bidding on the Secaucus or Newark Airport zones, but I don't know how bad the transportation really will be. We would only be making 1 trip to the city in the morning and home at night.Any help would be truly appreciated... and of course using the PRICELINE links, I'd use HOTWIRE if the hotels are a good rate and convenient.
dresden Posted July 10, 2008 Author Report Posted July 10, 2008 I had one rebid left for today and tried $160 for 3* in Jersey city and still never got it, so I'm not really sure if it's even available at all.

dresden Posted July 10, 2008 Author Report Posted July 10, 2008 Well I managed to really screw this part of the trip up. I figured that the Monday was what was really expensive (Hotwire had the Hyatt for $179 for the Sunday) so I bid another $100 bid to get the Hyatt in Jersey City on the Sunday and then stay near Newark Airport for the Monday night, because we are picking up a car there early Tuesday morning. This would have been perfect.... unfortunately I won the DoubleTree in Jersey City, not the Hyatt! Now I'm going to have to switch hotels twice on a 4 night stay. I really hope I can get an early check in at the double tree so I don't waste 1/2 the day transferring rooms. To make matters even more complicated I hope to go to the Yankees game on Monday night, so going from the Bronx to Newark airport is certainly going to take a while. So now I see 2 options:a ) Get a room near the airport for Monday so I can quickly get the car early tuesday morning.B ) Get a room elsewhere and pick up the car on Monday instead (haven't booked it yet). I'm looking at maybe Ft. Lee, how is the transportation from there to Manhattan? I absolutely appreciate any advice/help here, just because I'm totally not familiar with the area. PS - I will add the doubletree win and plan to book another 4 nights in boston soon.
dahammer Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 If you can't check into the Doubletree early, you may ask the hotel to hold your luggage, check in later. As far as getting to Newark from Yankee Stadium, you can take the subway to a PATH station (I believe WTC Station), then take PATH to Newark's Penn Station, then take NJ Transit to EWR. Or, you could take the subway from Yankee Stadium to New York Penn Station, then Amtrak to EWR. Let me see if I have this right, if you book Newark for Monday night, you would check out of the Doubletree, schlep the luggage over to the Newark hotel, then go from Newark to Yankee stadium and back after the game? FYI, NY Waterways operates the "Yankee Clipper" that will take you to the game via boat, I think its around $25 or so. The boat departs 30 minutes after the last out and there are two pickup points in NJ. Fort Lee is not convenient to Manhattan unless you have a car.
thereuare Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 To confirm:Friday: HyattSaturday: HyattSunday: DoubletreeMonday: ??? (Yankee Game at nite... Car Rental needed the following morning)Few questions...-where are you heading with the rental car? (Boston?? if so, do you need a car once in Boston)-how many days will you be renting the car for-was the 'extend your stay option' given on your Doubletree purchaseLet us know the above and i'll try to consider some options. Also, if you can't check-in early to the Doubletree, you can also have the Hyatt hold your luggage and then do the 'move' later in the day... at least gives you the ability to get an early start on Sunday morning and do the move in the evening rather than at the start of your day. Please use these PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links to begin your travel purchases. We fly out of Newark airport so we will bring the car back there as well.We were offered the extend your stay, but it was not accepted. Will they give us this option again? Thanks for the advice about holding our luggage, I think that makes the most sense. I dont want to be sitting around in Jersey City waiting to get into a new room. The plan (although flexible) is to rent the car either, Monday and park it, or Tuesday first thing in the morning so we can get going North.I am starting to feel like the best idea is to just get a hotel near EWR and suck up the long transit back there after the ball game. I apologize for how confusing this is, but appreciate the advice.
thereuare Posted July 10, 2008 Report Posted July 10, 2008 You only get the opportunity to try to "extend your stay" once, so that you won't be given the option again.Car rental companies are frequently looking for ways to get cars from Manhattan back to the airports, so the rate is usually pretty good for a rental in that one-way direction. So you may be able to rent something reasonably priced from Manhattan-->EWR, but the prices likely won't touch a PRICELINE rental directly from EWR.I know some local taxi companies that will only charge $28 from Jersey City to EWR (not sure if would equally apply to a hotel in the EWR vicinity) but at least that's a fairly inexpensive option to not have to deal with transering trains/shuttles/busses/etc late at nite to get to EWR. dresden Posted July 10, 2008 Author Report Posted July 10, 2008 Thanks again for your help, I may PM you once I have the itinerary settled. I might look into the Manhattan car rental too because I've been getting absolutely terrible rental rates from priceline for my dates. They are saying a good price is > $60 and great is > $68 for any size of vehicle i've tried. I think I could go right through the car company for cheaper than that when we plan to rent it for 7 days.
