Colfax Posted June 15, 2008 Report Posted June 15, 2008 Extended Stay America-Carlsbad1050 Grand AvenueCarlsbad, CA 92008I'm combining two winning bids in one post. For 6/10 my first bid of $40 was accepted. For 6/11 and 6/12 I tried lower. $38 rejected, $39 accepted. Best rate online was $109.99 for all three nights. There are two ESAs in the North County Coastal zone. The other is ESA-Oceanside.Before bidding 2* I was rejected to $75 for 3* and $75 for 2.5*. The U.S. Open was in progress and hotel occupancy high. Tiger Woods' entourage doesn't stay at ExtendedStay America, I guess.I'm not a fan of ESA chain and some of them are horrible. That said I had a good stay at this one, primarily because of the hotel's convenient location just off Carlsbad Village Drive. The hotel itself is no diferent than any other ESA, other than having an outdoor pool, which few ESAs do. It's a pedestrian friendly area, by San Diego area standards anyhow. For three days I had little need for my car. I could walk to the ocean, about six blocks away. Swimming beach access down a flight of wood stairs. Many casual restaurants with outdoor seating within walking distance. I recommend Al's for breakfast. French bakery and an Albertson's supermarket across the street. Close to the antiques district. The area had a nice "beach town" feel, without being crowded or rowdy.ESA's are mostly one-bed rooms and that's what you'll get on Priceline. A few two-bed rooms available for an upgrade fee when available. I find many ESA's with substandard soundproofing between rooms, which for me is a deal killer. I was lucky this time to get a quiet end room, not facing the freeway, with a quiet neighbor, or maybe no neighbor at all. In a different room I might not have been so content.I drove past the other ESA in Oceanside, which wasn't as good an area as this one.
