Priceline Hotel: 4* San Diego (Downtown-Harbor Island) Westin Gaslamp Quarter

For a pre-and-post wedding stay... but this time it's mine! Just looking for a nice 4* hotel close to the venue (downtown) for the night before, the night of, and the night after the big day. Of course, used the BB PRICELINE link.

Bid $90, then in $5 increments to $120 at which point I stopped to consider waiting a few weeks. I notice many accepted bids (in fact, almost all) below $120 for 4* in this zone in the past 12 months. Considering the economy is in the crapper, I figured I'd have no trouble, but apparently not!

Suggestions welcome as to how high you think I might have to go, and how long I might wait to try again.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

While most bids are won in this area sub-$120, there haven't been any bids reported thus far for travel after 9/1/08, so i would just give it a little time at this point.

I do think you have a good chance at succes if you continued to increase to $140, so if you have a lot of things going on with the wedding and just need to get this done, i would try going up another $20 on your next round of bidding, but otherwise i would continue as you have for the next month, bidding twice a week at this point.

Thanks for the advice. I've been going twice a week or so with the previous strategy of "up to $120", waiting for things to open up a bit, but with no luck.

Tonight, I reluctantly went to $140, and was still denied. I will probably wait to 60 days out, and try the same strategy again.

You may want to book a cancellable back-up in the meantime just to protect yourself from rates going even higher, plus, i'm sure you have a few other things on your mind right now... the added stress of a last minute booking with all the other wedding details going on without a back-up plan would only compound the problem.

I would suggest search Quickbook and our BetterChecker to easily search hotel direct rates for a refundable back-up.

Went to $140 again today, and failed.

Modified the dates to 9/20-9/22, and won the Westin Gaslamp Quarter for $110. (Previous unsucessful bid for 4* for these dates was $105.)

I did use the BB PRICELINE link.

Wanted to add that the best available rate on the website is $302.81/night (after taxes and fees), I paid $129.10 (after taxes and fees), a savings of 58%.

Westin has 9/19 availible for $270, about the same price available by booking direct. We're considering it.

Most likely the prices were higher because that's the weekend Street Scene, a big music festival, right in the heart of the gaslamp district.
