Priceline Hotel: Star rating

What is the lowest star rating hotel you would stay in New York city? I am looking for hotels around Central Park, Times Square or Upper west side?

My brother stayed on a priceline bid at the 2.5* Empire on the UWS and it was perfectly fine; unfortunately it's closed. However, the Marriott Courtyard in MTE is also a 2.5 and the reports are good.

In other cities I've been even a bit happier with some 2.5* than 3* hotels, because the 2.5*s include Courtyards and Residence Inns that have a very inclusive rate, even with a Priceline bid. The 3*s aren't that much better and charge for incidentals.

I subsequently did some research and found some really terrible reviews for certain 2* hotels - like the Howard Johnson hotels in Midtown West. People do seem to have gotten good deals for Midtown South 2* hotels, though.

In NYC i would stay at a 2.5* if nothing was available at the higher star levels that was reasonably priced, but i wouldn't buy an opaque 2* in this area.... just a bit too risky as to who my neighbors would be!
