Hello,

My husband and I are coming to NYC to celebrate a birthday 9/6 - 9/9. Have done significant research, but am new to priceline and would love your assistance on finding a 4* hotel. We will be seeing broadway shows and seeing the sights.

1) Have booked The New Yorker (Ramada) as a back-up hotel at $212.00 per night.

2) MTE, MTW, CPS are all options for us. We would consider MTS, UES, UWS as well.

3) Will go as high as $250.00

4) Rack rates for these dates in MTW 4* are Novotel are $319, Sheraton NY - $335, Sofitel - $369. MTE - W New York - $449

5) Will bid 3* only if we can get a better deal than New Yorker.

This seems to be a busy, more expensive weekend. Any hope for a better deal? I did a few priceline bids last night for the above areas and got as high as $200 with no success.

Thanks for the help!!

I just did a few bids. Here they are:

MTS 4* $150

added

MTE 4* $150

added

MTW4* $175

added

CPS 4* $200

added

UES 4* $200

I did these bids mainly to get a feel for the process. After more reading, now I understand that UES and UWS do not have 4* hotels and qualify for rebidding zones. I am ready for more serious bidding. Do you think my upper price is reasonable?

Thank you!!

Okay,

I followed the above strategy exactly with no success so far. :) In your opinion, am I better off to try this 4*, upper limit $250 approach again in a few days or downgrade to 3* and lower the price limit? If I downgrade to 3* how far should I lower my price limit? Also, what is your opinion of the New Yorker Hotel? Is it more of a 2*? Just wondering if we would see much of a difference between a 3* and the New Yorker?

Thank you so very much for your help!! :)

what is your opinion of the New Yorker Hotel?
Not very favorable... it gets poor reviews. Only decent thing going for it is the location.

I think you would see a difference between a 3* and the New Yorker, but there are some 3* hotels in NYC with notoriously small rooms, so it is possible you could get a 'cubicle' for a room... not sure if this would be acceptable to you or not. You could probaby have success at the 3* level at amounts you have already bid... i suspect you're not too far off from success at the 4* level, but don't know how firm your $250/max bid is. (although i'd have a tough time paying $200+ for a hotel room too)

Well, I just finished bidding the whole round again but this time upped my bid by beginning at 175 and ending at 280 for 4* just the way I did the other night. No success. Must be very tough time. Wondering if I will have any more luck as it gets closer or do you think it will get worse??

Also, I see the Affinia Manhattan has an average nonrefundable rate of $279 for those nights. Not sure if this is 3* or 4*. What do you think of that deal?

By the way, have been going thru savingsbarn.com for bidding at priceline.

Thanks very much for your help!!

This is thru Quikbook]? It's a pretty good deal, but for the same $279/nite i think i would sooner book the Fitzpatrick Grand Central... the hotel is not as well known, but gets equally good reviews, and unlike the Affinia, this one is cancellable, so you can continue to try to beat it as you get closer to your check-in date.

Thanks for the tip! :) I waited until last night and the Fitzpatrick Grand Central had gone down to $252 on Quikbook. I used your link and booked it at this rate. I think this is a good deal for these dates. Hotel gets excellent reviews and is great location. I did bid on priceline again this morning through savingsbarn.com for 4* from $175 up to $250 (MTE, MTW, CPS, MTS) and was rejected. I will keep trying, but feel satisfied now with my backup option.

Thanks again!! I'll let you know the progress.

Glad you have a suitable back-up and can now continue to try to beat it as you get closer to your stay.

Hotwire has a 4* hotel for these dates in Midtown East going at $146 nightly and looks like the Millenium UN Plaza. It's amenities include:

Fitness centre, Pool, Restaurant, Business Centre, Internet, and Tennis

Caveat Emptor: While Tripadvisor.com rates this hotel favourably overall, the website's latest review for this place tells of someone who had a handful when they came in with a Hotwire reservation that was not in the hotel's system. I also found another review of a Hotwire purchaser who talked of explicitly receiving the Hotwire treatment.

Proud to be Canadian!

Just for additional informational purposes...

The Millennimum UN is, as of last report, a 3* on priceline... just so you compare apples-to-apples. The hotel generally gets favorable reviews, but is a bit east. The location wouldn't bother me too much in September (unless it rains), but if you don't like to walk it can be too far out of the way as it's about a 10-15 minute walk to the subway... an advantage is that it's a bit more quiet at nite. To save $100 per nite i think it would be fine for me, as that savings can always be put towards a few extra cab rides if i didn't feel like walking, and still come out ahead of the game, but it depends upon what you're looking for. (ie- it's not as nice as the Fitzpatrick, and not as well located, but for $100 it may very well be worth the trade-off, depending upon your own needs)

What about the Ramada Plaza New Yorker. Rack rate is 220, and even thought the hotel is run down, I guess its in a really good central location which is kinda safe. Any thoughts. It that something we could priceline for 150? It is only a 2.5 on priceline.

You can't priceline a specific hotel, and for the same price, i would much sooner take the Millennium UN thru HOTWIRE than the Ramada New Yorker (which generally gets fairly poor reviews)

I know you cant but for that location its the lowest rack rate by far for a 2.5* so the odds would be good of getting it. I was just worried about the walk 15 minutes to the subway station. Is it not that bad?> Why would you suggest it, the reviews on tripadvisor aren't glowing...

The rack rates for that hotel are 329. so obviously this is a great deal. Ill use your link to purchase if I do.

Just another question. Are you SURE that this is the hotel here>? I think I might book it as I can cover the extra few dollars. Thanks!
