Hi,

I'm going to Hilton Head in 6 days, 08/17 (Fri) to 08/20 (Mon) and I've been bidding for about 2 weeks now at the maximum that I can pay ~$100. I've been counteroffered by priceline at ~$118 but I did not go with it. Bidding for Hilton Head does not have "zones" and after "resort" is a 2.5* so it's quite a jump. Hotwire's 4* is currently at $169.

I have no particular preference for Hilton or Crowne or Marriott, I'm just trying to get the best hotel for my once a year vacation. Looking at these hotel websites, the prices are all >$200.

I only have 6 days left to come up a place to stay. My current plan is just to keep trying daily at my maximum price and if I can't get it the night before I leave, I'll try a 2.5*. Does anyone have any strategies to help me out?

Thank you.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

As going from Resort to 2.5* is quite a jump i'd either:

-come up with the extra $50 to stay in a Resort property

-split the stay, staying at a less expensive hotel for the first or last nite of your stay and choosing the Resort property for the other two nites

Remember also that you'll like be able to beat priceline's counter-offer... so there is pretty good chance you could be successful at $105 or $110... the higher quality property would be worth scraping together the exta $15-$20 (especially when i know that the 'real' rate for the hotel is $200+)

Let us know whatever you ultimately decide to do for this stay or if we can be of further help.

the HOTWIRE 2.5* "Customer Favorite" for $66 could be the Quality Inn with the following amenities:

Complimentary Breakfast

Pool(s)

Restaurant(s)

Laundry Facilities

Business Center

High-speed Internet Access

Golf Nearby

Tennis Nearby

you might have a short drive to the beach from this property. The 4* is now at $189.

Thank you all for your input.

This morning I tried priceline for Saturday check-in and Monday checkout for a resort and got it for $101/nt (~$118 after tax and fees). We got Crowne Plaza Resort Hilton Head, the hotel website's price is $209/nt (+tax & fees) for those 2 days.

We're most likely going supercheap for Friday night since we're arriving at Hilton Head late anyways. We might try priceline again for a <2.5* and see if we can get anything for <$50. (I'll update this when I get it)

Incidentally, Hotwire's price for the 4* (for 08/18 - 08/20 ) dropped from $173 yesterday to only $129 this morning too. I guess the price during the week of the stay drops a lot.

Thank you thereuare and dahammer for your responses!

For friday night, you may want to also check out the Bluffton zone, this is on the mainland before you get onto Hilton Head Island, I would think that prices should be lower here. Where ever you end up for Friday night, just call the hotel to confirm your late arrival so that your room is not sold. The Crowne Plaza is in a good location, in Shipyard plantation, right on the beach, so if your room is not available you should be able to check out the beach.

hello again,

I got my first night's hotel on HOTWIRE for a 1* hotel (Knight's Inn, Hardeeville) at $43 ($55 after tax+fees).

Interesting thing, when I got to the hotel, the front desk thought I was a walk-in, so she rang up a sheet and was about to charge me for one night at $33 ($35 after tax). I told the lady that I have a hotwire reservation so she cancelled that and gave me my room key. I called hotwire that same night and told them that the walk-in rate was only $33 and would they match their price, the agent said they pricematch regardless of whether it's online or walk-in. But when she called (she probably identified herself as calling from hotwire) they told her the walk-in rate was $43! It seems to me like there's some dirty tricks going on!

thanks for the follow up for your Friday night stay. The Knights Inn looks like a new hotel for the South Carolina Hotwire Hotel List, but we need the amenities that go with this hotel. Can you please go back to your HOTWIRE account and click on "my stuff" at the top of the page and you can access the details of this stay. Thanks!

BTW, how was the HH Crowne Plaza?

Here are the details:

Knights Inn Hardeeville SC See details

203 Highway 17

Hardeeville, South Carolina 29927

(843) 784-2196

This Hotel features the following amenities:

Pool(s)

Property offers at least one pool area; hours and dates of operation may be seasonal.

Restaurant(s)

Property offers at least one restaurant on the premises; hours and days of operation may vary.

As for the Crowne Plaza:

- the front desk staff were extremely courteous and friendly: I actually lockedmy keys in my car when we were abou to check out, the staff helped me to call several locksmiths and asked around for the quickest one.

- it's definitely a big bonu that the the beach is right there basically 1 minute from our room

- my priceline reservation actually got us a double bed smoking room, but they happily changed that to a king smoking (which was the only standard room they had left; switching to an ocean view room would've been $70 more a night)

- before I even voiced my concern about the room being a smoking room, the front desk person offered to have housekeeping run a airpurifier in the room to get rid of the smell (it helped somehwat, but the smell was still there)

- all in all, we loved our hotel stay, espcially for that price. Personally, I don't think we would've been as satisfied if we had paid their website price of $209.
