Priceline Hotel: 2.5* San Francisco (Fishermans Wharf) Holiday Inn Express

After securing my first 2 nights (7/15 to 7/17) via Hotwire (4* Parc 55 USW $95/night), I am still working on my next 2 nights (7/17 to 7/19).

Here is a rundown of some 4* bidding I have just done, all REJECTED by Priceline. I started low and was being modest, taking advantage of free rebids. But the market isn't budging at the moment up to $160. I will try more rebids later, and maybe start bidding on lower star levels. Also I haven't seen any good deals come up on Hotwire, but I will try to keep checking...

Note that the starting bids for USW were very low based on another topic in this forum, someone won the Renaissance 4* USW for only $78 so I gave it a try.

Almost everything near Union Square is sold out, including 3* and Boutique.

What's left on Expedia is: Omni $668, Ritz Carlton $699, and Le Meridien $449.

With those prices I doubt you'll succeed for a 4* in USE or USW now. Even the Best Western Civic Center, which usually costs about $100, is $332 and the Travelodge on Market is $250.

HOTWIRE's ONLY offering near Union Square is a 2* in USW for $165.

The best value I see now is a HOTWIRE 2.5* in Fisherman's Wharf at $202. That looks like the Holiday Inn Express, which gets pretty good reviews and has free breakfast and highspeed. Regular rate is $289. You might be able to get a better price than $202 by bidding for a 2.5* in FW on Priceline. I suggest trying $150.

I suspect the poster who won the Renaissance at $78 was reporting a bid made several weeks ago.

I should have jumped on the 2.5* in FW (Holiday Inn Express) for $202 when I had the chance. Searching several sites for availability, it seems that Weds. 7/18 is very very booked right now. I divided my search up on Hotwire, and looked for just the first night 7/17 (checkout 7/18), and saw 2.5* in FW (likely HI Express) for $188, which came to $216.95 with fees.

I decided to try to undercut that on Priceline. I bid $160 and won 2.5* FW Holiday Inn Express, 7/17 to 7/18 (using SavingsBarn.com link) which comes to $191.47 with fees. Perhaps I could have tried $150, but I wanted to try to lock this down ASAP since this night could become just as sold out as the next night very soon.

I will call the hotel and see if they can notify me of any cancellations for the next night and try to extend my stay to 2 nights. Otherwise I will have to move for my final night (and options are very limited right now, but I will keep checking).

I did try again the $160 for my 2nd night 7/18 to 7/19, 2.5*, FW on Priceline, just to see if they somehow had inventory even though it was showing sold out, but rejected. So, I will keep looking...

Thanks!!!

Congratulations on your (partial) win.

Although a lot of money for a Holiday Inn Express it is a very good rate for this nite.

Thank you for sharing your win and for using the PRICELINE links at SavingsBarn.com to begin your bidding.

Since you said it was "slim pickings" for the remaining nite of your stay I took a look and found the King George Hotel in Union Square for $163/nite. I don't know anything about this property but reviews seem decent with an excellent location and it's cancellable up until noon the day before your check-in date, so may at least be good as a back-up to make sure you have an affordable roof over your head.

If you'd like further help for this last nite please start a NEW TOPIC (if you take the above just post a reply to this thread)

Thanks again... enjoy your stay.

Congratulations on your win, Steak2007. $160 is a substantial discount off the HIE's best price of $289 on 7/17.

The HIE still shows sold out on 7/18 but you might as well try Add a Night. You've got nothing to lose.

I second thereuare's suggestion of reserving the King George as a backup. The location is excellent.

I think there's a fair chance you'll be able to win a better hotel than the KG on Priceline or Hotwire once you get to SF. At big conventions like this there are always a few people who have unforseen events which lead them to depart earlier than expected and some reserved rooms may open up. I wouldn't be a bit surprised to hear that you win a 4* in USE or USW for $85 or $90 while the convention is in progress.

And if that doesn't happen...the King George ought to work just fine too.

Thanks for the advice and info.

I called HI Express, they said just keep checking if anything opens up. If I see anything, I'll try the "Extend stay" option on PL. Otherwise, I found a backup (the Hyatt directly across the street!) for a special corporate rate (not sure if I'm encouraged to post that here, but it is a good rate).

I will update if my PL plan works out. Thanks!
