mmp Posted April 25, 2007 Report Posted April 25, 2007 Have been reading these posts and feeling everyone's pain! Been trying 3* and 4*'s (MTE/MTW/UM-CPS) almost daily for the past couple weeks with no luck. I am used to getting 4*'s in NYC fairly easily but am getting nervous so have recently dropped down to 3*'s but still rejected up to $200. I've been using the rebidding strategies posted here. Have no backup at this time...everything appears to be high. Being at $200 or under more important than stars, but don't want a dump. Suggestions welcome!
mmp Posted April 26, 2007 Author Report Posted April 26, 2007 We really are trying to stay in Manhattan...esp Midtown area. We have never stayed in the financial district and considered bidding there but are a little concerned that that area may quiet down later at night. We like to be able to feel safe coming back to the hotel at any time and are afraid that might be too desolate?I went up to $210 last night for a 3* in the 3 areas previously mentioned but still no luck. Am hoping that maybe something will open up in the next few weeks. Thanks for taking the time to respond!
blindman Posted April 26, 2007 Report Posted April 26, 2007 I do believe the Financial district 'quietens down' in the evening, but being an 'out of towner' I couldn't really comment accurately.I would research this board for the alternatives to staying in New York, just as a back up if things start getting tight. They all have their pros and cons depending upon your purpose of visit and how adventurous you are! I would also urge you to book a cancellable backup if possible.Good luck
AaronJB Posted April 26, 2007 Report Posted April 26, 2007 I'm guessing the financial district is similar to Chicago's Loop area, which - while not really unsafe, pretty much shuts down at night. However, at least if you head a little bit North, I'm guessing a lot of the nearby areas (Chinatown, Soho, etc.) are still going later at night.
mmp Posted April 26, 2007 Author Report Posted April 26, 2007 Thanks for your advice ... I am really considering the financial area now as maybe it would be fun to stay in a different area and I did see one post got a 4* Hilton for $175. It's not like we couldn't find a taxi if we end up too far from the hotel at the end of the night. We are comfortable using the subway as a way to get around other times. Our visit is for FUN! We got tickets to the Stephen Colbert show; these free tickets are probably going to end up costing us $1000 or more. Also going to try to get lucky and find some reasonably priced tix to the Subway series at Shea or at least find a fun bar to watch a game (much more likely!).Another wrinkle is our flight leaves LGA at 6:30 a.m. on 5/22 so maybe will get a room near there for night of 5/21. Was willing to take a very early taxi to LGA to avoid changing hotels but staying closer is starting to look like a better option. Thanks again; will let you know of any wins.
mmp Posted May 19, 2007 Author Report Posted May 19, 2007 Not sure how to change my topic heading. Anyway, finally gave up on Manhattan as everything just seemed too pricey (easily over $250?) for this particular weekend. Today got Holiday Inn at LaGuardia for $130 per night (listed as 3*). Will use the money we saved on hotel for transportation back and forth to the city. Close to the Subway Series action; maybe we'll get to that Met game after all plus it works as we're leaving out of LGA very early Tuesday. Good luck to everyone!
