dahammer Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 same day bidding in the Mahwah NJ area was difficult, I bid up to $55 for a 2* (hoping to get the Candlewood Suites) and received a counteroffer message to increase my bid to $70. Decided to start a new bid in the Elmsford Tarrytown area at the 3* level, bid $75 and received a counteroffer to increase my bid to $97. Thought this might be the Crowne Plaza in White Plains and did not want the hassle of parking in a garage and slogging through the lobby, then up to my room. Decided to drop to a 2.5* and kept the bid at $75, success!Your Offer Price: $75.00 Taxes & Service Fees: $16.27 Total Charges: $91.27 If unsuccessful at bidding I would have used a "rest stop" coupon for the Tarrytown Hampton Inn for $79; I called the Hotel to inquire about availabliityand the clerk quoted $219 per night. I asked her if she would accept the coupon and she said yes! I was absolutely floored that there was such a huge $140 difference between the "rack rate" and the coupon rate...really!!! :) $250 (with taxes) for a stinkin' Hampton Inn, just off the Tappan Zee Bridge, many miles from Manhattan. I guess I should not be surprised anymore, but hotel rack rates just continue to increase and I wonder just who is paying these. Even this Courtyard is $219 tonight, so I was pleased with my win...well the Hampton does have the free breakfast and really good coffee in the morning.... :) Placed my winning bids through Savingsbarn.com :o
