First post, please be gentle!

Hotwire is offering me a 2.5* stay for a mere $109 5/2-5/4 in this area. The listed amenities are:

Restaurant(s), Laundry Facilities, High-speed Internet Access

For the same dates, a 2* (the Candlewood Suites, judging by the amenities - Fitness, Kitchenette, Hi-Speed Internet, Laundry) is $175.

Does anyone have any hints as to what the 2.5* property might be?

Welcome to BetterBidding!

I'll give you my thoughts in a moment, but first a warning: Note that the Jersey City zone extends as far to the west as Tonnelle Ave... and you don't want to stay in this area of the zone if you're looking for easy access to NYC (or if you're looking to stay in a 'nice' area)

With the above noted, the property you describe has not yet been identified, but i'd guess the Days Inn is a possibility, and if so, this is not a hotel i would recommend. There are some new hotels that were recently built in the 'middle' of Tonnelle avenue, and this could be one of those as well, but i still wouldn't recommend it.

If you're going to stay in Jersey City as a cheaper alternative to staying in NYC, you really want to be down by the waterfront area of Jersey City.

Thank you for your thoughts!

I'd ideally prefer to pay significantly under $200 per night and preferably under $150 - however, that seems to be looking unlikely without sharing a bathroom.

I'm going to a wedding in DC on the 5th, and was going to fly LHR-NYC/IAD-LHR to see both cities, so I don't absolutely have to stay in NYC at all (and won't, if there's nothing at a reasonable price). However, I'd like to spend a couple of days in New York before going to DC - the city never sleeps, and with jet-lag neither will I...

Indeed, I was looking at Jersey City as a cheap alternative to a hotel on the island. The Hyatt doesn't seem to have any availability at all. The Holland Motor Lodge gets very good reviews on TripAdvisor and is going for $100, which is tempting, but I'm concerned about how safe the area is.

It seems hard to get anything at all under $200 on the island without sharing a bathroom for those dates.

Would welcome ideas! Thanks!

Ah, looks like a good price for that hotel, and a good location - a little more than I wanted to spend, but options do seem to be limited.

I'll sleep on it. Thanks again!

The rate thru this Pod Hotel link is cancellable up until 48 hours before your check-in date. As the rate is pretty good for these dates, and this agecny only gets a limited number of rooms at that price, i would recommend booking it so that you're locked in at that price... if you find something better or change your mind you can always cancel.

Thanks. The prices on HOTWIRE are getting nicer - now $169 for a 3* in Times Square - Theatre District (would hope for the Crowne Plaza Hotel Manhattan, but probably the Paramount - don't mind about the small rooms, but the beds get heavily criticised on TripAdvisor).

I've booked in the Pod as a back-up anyway - great suggestion! Now to book the flights and watch HOTWIRE over the next week or two.

Many thanks for your help!

I have been tempted to try this before, but I think that the restaurant amenity gives it away.....I could be wrong, but I believe this is the Days Inn, North Bergen. I don't think you'd want to stay here.
