Priceline Hotel: Help with Jersey City

For the past few days I have been bidding on Jersey City 3 Star for May 30 3 nights.

I started with $75, then rebid with $80 adding Elizabeth.

The next day I bid 80 and rebid 85.

Today I rebid at 105 and was not accepted.

Since I still have over two months to go, is this strategy ok?

I could drop back some and start adding a 3rd rebid with Secaucus.

I would like to get the room before reaching 125.

Is there some reason why they might be higher, like the it is the week after Memorial Day.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Just to clarify, Secaucus is not a re-bid zone when bidding 3 stars, so only add that zone if you're willing to stay in that area.

If you go to the Hyatt website and check rates for your dates you'll see that rates average nearly $300/nite (with two of the nites being nearly $350)... so you've only bid about 1/3 of the hotel's rate for these nites. With rates so high, the chance of success at $125 or under is low.

Assuming Secaucus and Jersey are both just as convenient to get to NY, then I do not mind either.

Is a 3* usually less expensive in Secaucus?

Thanks for your quick response.

They're not equally as convenient.

Secaucus would likely be cheaper for this stay, but you'd then be commuting by bus, which is certainily do-able, but not nearly as convenient as if you received a Jersey City hotel near the PATH train.

My experiences in trying to get a hotel in Jersey City is that it is just about impossible to get a room from Monday to Wednesday nights at discount prices. Friday-Sunday generally is great in trying to get either the Doubletree or the Hyatt, while Thursday nights are hit and miss.

I would concur with this and also add my thoughts on Secaucus.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza last August. The review has links to the transport options and some maps.

Also managed to get the Hyatt at Jersey city but only for the Friday and Saturday. -That thread also has links for Secaucus transport and maps etc.-

Having stayed in New York and the Hyatt a couple of times then our stay was focused on moneysaving and location.

The Hyatt is by far the better location but was not available on PL for the Wednesday night.

We had a very special rate at the Crowne Plaza and had no problems getting the bus into New York, though one had to watch the time of arrival and departures to prevent waiting a long time.

Journey time was about 20-30 mins.

Hyatt is next to the PATH, journey time about 5 mins and runs very frequently.

We had no car, so we didn't need the FREE parking at Secaucus, the Hyatt is well known for its high parking fee, though this can be negated by on street parking at times.

The taxi from the airport was about $35, probably slightly less if we went to the Hyatt.

IMHO I'd stick with the Hyatt bidding, keeping a close eye on their web-rates and HOTWIRE.

When they fall to <$200 or $100 respectively then you may have a chance, but read the proviso above.

In the meantime research the pros and cons of Secaucus and if in the last week :) you've still not got the Hyatt then consider Secaucus.
