While your offer price was probably still a good deal, in my opinion you did quite pay a bit over the odds.

The hotel charged you GBP44, but that's including VAT, or GBP37.45 excluding VAT--you paid GBP50 excluding VAT

That's a fair point that you make. However when you consider that the cheapest rate including tax on hilton.co.uk for a last minute booking at the Hilton Kensington on a Thursday night is

Absolutely--like I said, this was still a very good deal particularlyl considering that you were upgraded.

In any case, it's good to know for future bidders that the rate at this hotel could again be around GBP38 w/o VAT. :-)
