zjv Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 Hi,I'd like to select the 4* Newark (Jersey City) deal in the hope of getting the Hyatt Regency on the Hudson for Dec 12 to Dec 19, but I was wondering if it is too early to book now. The quoted price on Hotwire is over $260 per night at the moment, is it likely to come down?Does this hotel ever sellout on Hotwire? I see most people are able to get rooms for around $110 per night sometimes even much less, do you recommend that I wait? If so, until when?I'm happy to pay upto $150 for this room but I think $260 is a bit excessive, I can't use Priceline as they do not accept Australian credit cards (I have successfully used Hotwire before). Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I think you may have a problem getting the whole 7 days at a 'reasonable' price.IMHO $260 is too much to pay for this opaque service for this hotel.Your Australian card should be OK, make up a USA address when prompted, they don't send paper acknowlegements (any more) and do not cross check with the card.Thread about that here
thereuare Posted September 16, 2006 Report Posted September 16, 2006 For a discussion of "when to purchase" see the related link in our PRICELINE FAQ.Priceline and HOTWIRE do not carry inventory, so they themselves do not "sell-out". However, they are an outlet for hotels to sell rooms that they (the hotel) believe would otherwise go unsold. If a hotel believes they can most/all of their rooms on their own, they will not offer any inventory to the opaque suppliers (or offer rates that only represent a very small discount). This being peak "season" for the NYC metro area, the hotel is only offering a slight discount to HOTWIRE... if the hotel begins to get fewer reservations than they expect in the next few weeks or receives more cancelaltions than expected of existing reservations, then they may offer additional inventory (or deeper discounts) to the opaque suppliers; however, if they receive fewer cancellations than expected or see more reservations than expected in the coming weeks, then they can pull invetory entirely from the opaques.Given the peak season, i would recommend booking a back-up reservation as soon as possible. It will be tough to find a 'good' hotel within your budget to use as a back-up, but the Jersey City Doubletree has a cancellable $199/nite rate and i would book that as a back-up to make sure you don't see prices go up on you and price you out of the area entirely. (if you do book this please use the link in this post to do so)Let us know how we can be of further help. zjv Posted September 17, 2006 Author Report Posted September 17, 2006 Thanks for the advice, greatly appreciated.Does anyone know if I am better off trying for a hotel in Manhattan on my dates (12/12 to 12/19)? I am happy to pay up to $200 a night for a property similar in quality to the Hyatt in JC. I am prepared to move properties once during my stay if I can only get a good deal for some of the nights. I would have assumed hotels would be cheap at this time of year as few people travel for business.I found this one "4-star hotel in Times Square - Theatre District" with the following features Boutique, fitness centre, restaurants, laundry facilities, high-speed internet access, it is above my budget but only slightly more than the Jersey City option. Anyone know what hotel it is? (I apologise if I should ask this question as a new thread under NYC).I only chose Jersey City as I assumed it would be convenient and I thought it would be cheaper.
zjv Posted September 17, 2006 Author Report Posted September 17, 2006 On a side note I am going to try and see if Priceline accept my Australian visa card using the information in the threads I was directed to.Can someone please help me with the bidding strategy to use to try to get either the Hyatt or Doubletree in Jersey City? I assume I select 3 stars in Jersey city and then if my bid is rejected, which area do I add for the new zone to re-bid?Thanks
dahammer Posted September 17, 2006 Report Posted September 17, 2006 we could tell you the rebid zones, but what fun would that be?? :) you need to check off each zone in the Newark area individually and note the highest star rating for each zone. You should see one zone with the highest star rating less than 3*....which zone is this?
thereuare Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 You need to know how to check your re-bid zones yourself because they can, and do, change... so they need to be checked before each bidding cycle to make sure you don't end up in an area you don't really want to stay.Begin by reading Priceline Re-Bidding Explained, if you don't understand something feel free to ask for help, or if you're really lost just say so and we'll take it one step at a time.
