Hotwire Hotel: 4* Newark (Jersey City) Hyatt Regency on the Hudson

First time with kids to NYC and we are not really sure what part of town to stay in, but want to do all typical family tourist stuff and will have an 8 and 10 year old with us. Will arrive by car on Friday and we are flying out of JFK Sunday morning.

Hotwire only shows a $399 per night 3* hotel with the Midtown East and Times Square zones checked.

I found a Queen Suite at the Beekman for $259 per night. Is this my best bet, or should I try bidding around $200 per night on some 4* hotels on Priceline? I have never used a bidding site before.

Thanks for any advice!

There are certainly better options than paying $400/nite for a hotel room! :)

Few questions first...

-a Queen Suite at the Beekman? Is it a Studio Suite with a Queen Bed or a 1BR Suite with a Queen bed

-i see you're coming by car... from where are you coming from (there's a reason i'm asking)

I went ahead and booked the room at the Beekman just in case and the reservation says:

Room Type: One Bedroom Suite - 1 Queen

It ended being over $300 per night with all the taxes and fees. It seems

This will be the last two days of a 10 day trip. We are flying into Boston and renting a car and then driving up to Maine (Bar Harbour, Booth Bay, etc.). On the way back we were going to stop in Cape Cod to visit some friends and then spend the last couple of days in NYC before flying out of JFK.

Our flight out is really early Sunday morning (around 8AM) so I am half tempted to just stay by the airport instead of in Manhattan, but I do not want to take away from our time in the city just to be convenient to the airport for the last day.

I am open to suggestions and really appreciate the help.

Would you stay in Jersey City (at the Hyatt?) for under $100/nite?

There is a PATH station at the door of the hotel that will have you in midtown NYC in 18 minutes and Downtown in 8 minutes. The trains run very frequently excpept after 2am which i assume you won't be out that late with two small children :), parking will be less than in NYC, and all rooms have a view of Manhattan. The reviews are very good and you can see a lot of pics of this property at our sister site RealHotelPhotos.com

Your thoughts?

Thanks for the quick reply. That sounds like a pretty good option, I will have to run it by the wife. If the trains go directly in to the city and are not very scary to ride, she will probably be OK with it.

Any idea how long it would take for me to get from that location to JFK on Sunday morning to catch an 8AM flight?

Depending upon where you would have stayed in Manhattan, it will add about 10-15 minutes on to your trip to JFK.

Google Maps puts it at about 40 minutes, but i'd say it's closer to 50-60, assuming no traffic, which is a BIG assumption, although i'd doubt there will likely be much if any on a Sunday morning (but around these parts you really never know).

Thanks so much. This sounds like a winner. I checked the RealHotelPhotos site and the hotel's website and the hotel and the views just look awesome and I can definitely put the $400 saved to better use in NYC.

So should I just go to Hotwire pick Hoboken-Jersey City and pick the one with 4*'s for $95? (I swear it was $87 before lunch!)

How about cancelling the Beekman? Anything special I need to do there? Do you know if there is a way to do it on line, or should I send them an e-mail or call?

Thanks again.

You can match up the amenities and star rating with what has been previously reported in our Hotwire Hotel List for this property. You're still buying an opaque product and there could be another hotel with the same exact amenities and star rating (just a disclaimer), but i know this area very well and i'd be very surprised if this was something other than the Hyatt.

I'm not sure how you booked the Beekman so i can't comment as to how you should go about cancelling the reservation.

Let us know how it goes... good luck :)

It was the Hyatt and I cancelled the Beekman and booked it. It was a great hotel in a great location and we had a view of the Statue from our oom. It was very convenient as there was a subway station right outside the front door. I still can not believe we got such a good price on that hotel.
