Redgreen Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 I'm new to this - but wanted some advice...Looking for a 3* in manhattan (ideally midtown) Tried:140 MTW150 MTW / USW160 MTW / MTE / MTC (and a few other combos) - no luck! And got nothing - are prices really that high for this weekend? Or did I just misuse the system. In terms of other 3*+ options are there other nearer Laguardia? (I'm also trying the Hyatt Jersey City but got dinged at $70 and can't rebid for now)Thanks - great site!
thereuare Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Rates are quite high for these dates. What is your maximum bid? Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? Are you driving or flying (or train) into the area?LGA is not a viable alternative as it's not really that convenient to the city via mass transit (and if you were to cab it you would be better off spending that money towards a room in the city). Redgreen Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 For a 3* I'd like to not increase above $180, then I'd drop to a 2.5* (what should I expect for that?)I won't be able to split my bid unfortunately. From your location comments I'll focus on mid-town.Thanks!
GM Mike Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 How are you arriving? Flying in? Driving? Train? From where, approximately?I have become a lone voice in the wilderness pushing Norwalk, CT, as a viable option for people going to NYC. Check out this thread about my last trip to the city, especially posts #8 and #11. We paid $46+tax/fees for a solid 2.5* plus $7 parking at the train station and ~$25 round trip each for the train into the city. So for two of us, it was about $110 per night. Only annoyance is the train trip is about an hour each way. That's no big deal for me but it might be for you.
Redgreen Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 I'm arriving from Laguardia.I like the CT idea but for this trip I won't be able to make the trip because I'm staying late both nights and doing the "tourist" thing. Red
thereuare Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 At the 3* level you have one re-bid zone available. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Based upon your previously rejected bids, this is how i would proceed:Select 3* MTW...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected clsoe browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* UM/CPS...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected clsoe browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* MTE...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $155, if rejected clsoe browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* MTW and UM/CPS...Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170, if rejected clsoe browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* UM/CPS and MTE...Bid $165, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170, if rejected clsoe browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* MTW and MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $175, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180.Any questions feel free to ask.Good Luck and let us know how it goes. Redgreen Posted May 4, 2006 Author Report Posted May 4, 2006 3* MTW at 140Rebid with UWS at 1553* UM/CPS at 140Rebid with UWS at 1553* MTW / UMCP at 170Rebid at 180 Lowered my standards:2.5* MTW / MTE / MTC at 120Rebid at 130No luck.I noticed using your maps that there are very few 2.5* - would they be booked?Red
thereuare Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 We see very little 2.5* bidding in NYC.There are fewer hotels in the priceline system at this star level and there can be some less desirable properties as you begin to lower your star rating, so often the savings just aren't worth the risk of ladning one of these lower rated hotels. Redgreen Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 Just an update - I'm up to $230 after bidding 220 on 3* with no luck. Overall this looks like a very expensive weekend!
Redgreen Posted May 6, 2006 Author Report Posted May 6, 2006 Got one - Millenium Plaza $200 / nt. 5/19 - 5/22My bidding could have been better but here's how it went (after unsuccessful up to $220 two days ago)MTW 3* 180Rebid MTW / UWS 200Closed and triedMTE 3* 200 - got millenium plaza on first shot. Prices definitely down from yesterday.thereuare: do I post this elsewhere or is this sufficient? Thanks for your help - I still have room to learn :)
thereuare Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 No need to start a new topic... we'll just edit the title of this thread and anyone can then see the saga of your win!Have a great stay.Be sure to try Ess-A-Bagel for breakfast one morning... not too far from your hotel and has one of the best bagels in NYC which makes for an inexpensive breakfast.
