Priceline Hotel: Help: San Francisco 3* (or less) Downtown (9/26-10/1)

Hello,

My bf and I are planning to travel to San Fran and use Priceline to find a hotel deal for our stay there (Sept 26th to Oct 1st). Since we're not gonnna have a car, we plan to stay downtown and spend max. of $60 per night on accomodation.

The help i need is how early should I start the bidding. or rather what's the optimal lead time to get the cheapest rate? And any suggestion on the bidding strategy?

$60 in USE/USW hasn't hit in about three years. Also, 3* in those zones pretty much don't exist.

You might hit for that much in the outer zones, or hit 4* downtown for $75+.
