bagsready Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 Planning a trip April 2-9. Plan to see a Broadway show, and to visit Union Square, the Highline, Central Park, Brooklyn and perhaps the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. Wondering if the LES/Chinatown area is well located for those purposes. If so, I see on Priceline.Express that they have a 3 1/2 star for ~$176, pet friendly, restaurant, fitness and business centers that might be the Wyndham Garden Chinatown. They also have a 2 star for $158, pet friendly, free breakfast and internet that might be the Comfort Inn Manhattan Bridge. Have I correctly identified them? If those are the correct identifications, they appear to be very closely located to one another, and they both receive positive reviews - is the Wyndham worth the additional expense? Are they conveniently located for our interests? Is another location a better choice? Especially for access to the L line? Thanks.

thereuare Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 Why are you looking at this zone and/or want to be close to the L line? I think a more centrally located midtown property would be better suited for your needs. At first i thought may be you were considering this area based upon price, but i see this 4* MSG property for $155/nite, which is not only higher rated than either of the above, but also more centrally located and cheaper. Use the discount link and code in my signature and you're under $150/nite. The amenities are common for this one, but my best guess would be the Wyndham New Yorker Hotel. bagsready Posted March 8, 2014 Author Report Posted March 8, 2014 Partly I was looking at that area based on price; and I'm not that familiar with the NYC areas. I wanted to be close to the L line or have easy and convenient access to the L line because someone we will be spending time with uses that line extensively. I saw that 4* MSG listing that I suspected was the Wyndham New Yorker, but I was concerned about some of the reviews I read on Trip Advisor. I'd be happy enough to go with your suggestion, however, if the L line access is sufficiently convenient and the reviews are on balance okay in your/others' opinions. Thanks.
AaronJB Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 You have to keep in mind with reviews in NYC that a hotel with consistently good-to-great reviews is pretty exceptional. NYC's high rates create expectations that I think often cannot be met. I've stayed at many hotels that I've liked or loved for under $100, but wouldn't have felt similarly at $200 and up. If reviews bring up serious concerns, that is certainly something to pay attention to, but otherwise, I think NYC's high rates often do result in somewhat lower overall reviews. The Wyndham New Yorker is in a terrific location and only recently became a Wyndham. Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted March 8, 2014 Report Posted March 8, 2014 I wanted to be close to the L line or have easy and convenient access to the L line because someone we will be spending time with uses that line extensively.I assume this person lives outside of the city and will be coming in to meet you, and most of your time would be spend in Manhattan (as opposed to you traveling outside of the city to meet them??) Inside of Manhattan the L train just runs east/west up/down 14th St, so it's more of a cross town train (mostly used by those outside of the city to get in/out of Manhattan)... unless your plans are in the immediate area of 14th St, those on this train are more likely taking another train to their final destination. As your friend apparently is local to the city, it would be easier for him/her to meet you at 1) your hotel, or 2) your first destination for the day... then from either location start your day's exploration (which will in all likelihood not necessarily focus on the area surrounding 14th St) They Wyndham recently took over the New Yorker from Ramada, and i think the change of brands is one reason for their aggressive pricing at the moment... difficult to say if the quality will improve/decline with the new brand, and while the hotel is not my favorite in the city, it's decent enough at the right price, as it has a very good location. bagsready Posted March 8, 2014 Author Report Posted March 8, 2014 As they say - location, location, location. Went ahead with it via your link. It is indeed the Wyndham New Yorker. Thanks. PRICELINE EXPRESS: Pets Allowed Restaurant Business Center Fitness Center
thereuare Posted March 9, 2014 Report Posted March 9, 2014 Congratulations on your success! A very nice deal for this well located property at this time of year... glad to see you're pleased with the results and looking forward t your trip. You're also near one of my new favorite bagel shops which is worth a stop: Best Bagel and Coffee 35th St b/w Seventh and Eight Ave (north side of the street) The line always looks long but it goes pretty fast... you order in the back, get a receipt and pay in the front, then wait for your order (often by the time you pay your order is ready). It's small and you sometimes can't get a table, but certainly worth a morning stop for one of the best bagels in the city (regardless of whether their name claims it or not ;) ) Thank you for sharing your win and using the PRICELINE links on the board to begin your bidding.
