Hello,

First time traveler to New York. I want to stay within walking distance to Times Square. I am looking to spend around 160 max 190 night. Please assist with best bidding strategiesand areas to include. I am unfamiliar with what areas are within walking distance.

Would be willing to do stay in 3* if you can advise nice hotels..per the hotel listing looks like priceline 3* are not bad? Also, what would be a good starting bid for 3 stars?

Thanks!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

How far of a distance do you consider to be 'walkable'?

Also, while Times Square is great to visit, i hope (and recommend) that you explore other parts of the city as that is where the 'real' New York is, as we discuss in this Hotels near Times Square thread.

I would sooner try for a higher rated hotel that is still centrally located but not directly in Times Square (ie- including Times Square in your bidding would be good, but you don't have to stay directly in Times Square itself). However, ultimately it's your stay and you know your needs for this trip best.

Let us know the information above and we'll take it from there.

Would LIke to be within 10-15 minute walk.

I would like to also visit central park, maybe do a broadway show - possible a night time water taxi tour.

I am open to suggestion - my first time so I would like to see as much as I can in the time I am there. - Please let me know the places that are must see.

I am open to any suggestions - would like a 4* for around 160 a night if possible so if other places have better hotels, please let me know.

Thank you for your assistance!

I completely agree with what thereuare wrote regarding NYC. Times Square is arguably the most "widely known" area of NYC, but there's just so much more to see in the city. When I've gone there in the past, I have spent less and less time in TS.

The one thing that I really recommend that everyone go see in NYC is the Intrepid Air and Space Museum, which is to me such a unique and memorable experience. It's an aircraft carrier parked on the Hudson River that has been renovated and turned into a museum. There is also a sub next to it. It's a pretty amazing thing to be able to stand on the deck of an aircraft carrier in general, but to do so in NYC and be able to look in all directions, it's definitely a memorable experience that would be towards the very top of what I'd do if I was going to NYC tomorrow.

I think be prepared to walk. You can certainly take the subway, but I've walked from Times Square to Battery Park and then up around the other side past the Empire State Building, Grand Central, up to Central Park and back. That's pretty extreme (it was probably something like 16 miles), but I think what's so exceptional about NYC is that there are so many little shops, little restaurants that are uniquely NYC. Walking 16 miles is extreme, but you find yourself walking and walking and then all the sudden realize how far you've gone.

I think a 4* is possible, but if possible it would likely only be so unfortunately at the very top end of your budget ($190 - HOTWIRE has a few different Midtown 4*'s for around $205-215) and may take slightly higher than that, depending on the zone.) 3.5* is likely attainable within your desired budget, as is 3*, although I'm not sure if 3* will be significantly cheaper than 3.5*. These are unfortunately just busier date/s, given the weather and probably other events (may be a college graduation or two around this time.)

If you were going to NYC now I'd suggest differently given the ultra-cold weather, but given that you are going in the Spring, I recommend the Midtown East area (although do be aware that some hotels in this zone are towards the very far E border of the zone and a bit out of the way), the Empire State area, the MSG-Convention area, Midtown West and Central Park South (although be aware at the 4* level in CPS, there is the Hudson, which has rooms that are about 130 sq ft.)

Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

For the average user MTE, MTW, TS, MSG, and ESB are all generally considered to be centrally located and work out well. Some parts of these zones may be a 20 minute walk to Times Square, but subways from these areas could have you there in less than 10 minutes. As well, remember that even if you do go to Times Square often, it won't likely be directly to/from your hotel, more likely you will be in other parts of the city and head to Times Square as part of your touring for the day, and from Times Square heading to other parts of the city.

I agree that for a 4* hotel you're likely looking in the $180-$200 range. To begin, do you want to try for a 4* hotel up to $160, and if that is rejected, is your next move to increase your budget for a 4* hotel OR lower your star rating to 3.5* and try again up to $160?

Let us know the above, including if you find all the zones listed above acceptable, and we will advise accordingly.
