lindaz Posted September 2, 2013 Report Posted September 2, 2013 We are returning to the city and I'd appreciate your help in determining a strategy. I posted the same question two years ago and did successfully book a 4* room just days before departure at the Marriott Downtown utilizing the recommended strategy at that time. Reviewing the post I see that I did not update with my winning bid which is too bad; I do remember getting quite a savings.I was hoping to use the same strategy but checking Priceline I see more zones and only two free re-bid zones today for 4* (Queensborough Bridge and Coney Island are grayed out leaving Morningside and Long Island City). With the added zones I'm overwhelmed for a strategy.Doing a bit of homework I see that I could get a non-refundable room at the same Marriott for just under $300/night and one Hotwire I see 3.5* hotels in Manhattan for about $200. I'm going to look for both 4* and 3.5* getting the best bargain possible is what I'm after.Zones: CH, CPS, DT, ESB, HK, LES, MSG, MTW, Soho, TSThank you for your help.
AaronJB Posted September 2, 2013 Report Posted September 2, 2013 Please provide your desired max bid per night for this stay.Thank you for using the board's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
lindaz Posted September 3, 2013 Author Report Posted September 3, 2013 Ideally $50.00/night less than what I can get on HOTWIRE or direct book; $150 3.5*, $250 4*.Thank you.
Twirlie Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Where are you planning to stay? The The Lexington New York City, Autograph Collection® in Mid Town East is coming up at $358.71 on the full priced PRICELINE search for your entire stay including taxes. That's $101 a night. We THINK it might be a glitch, but could be worth getting in on the action on the chance they do honour it. Use this link to access it: PRICELINE
thereuare Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 Ideally $50.00/night less than what I can get on HOTWIRE or direct book; $150 3.5*, $250 4*.You can get a 4* hotel for this stay in the DT, ESB, MTE, MSG and CPS zones (and possibly others)... did you want to first bid up to $250 for a 4* hotel before trying for a 3.5* property (which i dont' think is necessary since i think you can get a 4* in one of your listed zones).Given that multiple zones should have 4* hotels offered at $250 or less, did you have a preference of one zone vs. the others OR is the least expensive 4* in any of your acceptable zones the goal here? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Please confirm the above and we'll advise accordingly. lindaz Posted September 4, 2013 Author Report Posted September 4, 2013 Twirlie, I missed the big bargain! Bummer and thank you.thereuare, the goal is least expensive 4*, we love New York City and are happy to be in any spot we get provided we don't have to walk 15 minutes to the subway. Thank you.
thereuare Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 In the MTE zone the One UN New York has been upgraded to the 4* level but has not yet been reported to the board thru PRICELINE's 'name your own price' side of their service... would this property be acceptable OR should we not include MTE in the bidding strategy? (as this hotel can be a 15 minute walk to the subway)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. lindaz Posted September 4, 2013 Author Report Posted September 4, 2013 Omit MTE for the 4* search. Again, thank you.

lindaz Posted October 7, 2013 Author Report Posted October 7, 2013 After a week of bidding following your bidding strategy response I gave up knowing I'd need to wait until right before traveling for a great rate. In the interim I booked a cancellable room for $250/night at an either 3.5 or 4*--not really clear to me which it was.Yesterday I bid in $10 increments from $100 to $150 for a 3.5 star in the zones above and nothing. Tonight I started at $110 with one zone, bid in $10 increments adding two zones and just got the Millenium Hilton Downtown for $140/night, upgraded to a 4*. I am beside myself happy with a new three night stay of $513 as compared to $810 (there was a summer coupon savings through Travelocity on the cancellable room)!Thank you so much for your assistance. Yes, I did click through to PRICELINE from this site.
