I know this is a hotel board, but the rental car boards are pretty sparce :) My bidding strategy was something like:

$15 full size, rejected

$15 standard, rejected

$15 mid size, rejected

$15 compact, rejected

$13 economy, rejected

(not sure if that order is exactly right)

I had read someplace that someone won an economy or compact car for $12 around the dates for pick up at SAN, so what gives? Ace shows a small car for $19, so I was thinking $13 wasn't too shabby. Should I wait the 3 days and try again?

you would definately want to make a cancellable, back up reservation immediately in case inventory gets tight and you are unsuccessful in 3 days. You can only bid for rental cars every seven days.

The reason the car rental boards are sparse is because the deals just aren't that good for car rentals. Given the (slim) savings vs. the trade-offs (non-cancellable, booking fee on short-term rentals, etc) many choose to book direct.

When you compare your $13 bid vs. the $19 thru Ace, there are a few things to note:

-priceline doesn't deal with Ace, so their price is irrelevant other than to know your own bidding limits

-although the difference between $13 and $19 is only $6... that $6 represents nearly 50% of your bid amount. You're bid is only 2/3rds of conventional rates... savings that are hardly a 'lay-up' for car rentals.

Have you tried our Car Rental Checker and/or Hotwire to see their rates (some find them more competitve than Priceline for Car Rentals).
