rezurrectah Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 I was upgraded to a 3* hotelYour Offer Price: $55.00Number of Rooms: 1Number of Nights: 2Subtotal: $110.00Taxes & Service Fees: $24.02Total Charges: $134.02I received this hotel after my third attempt. I tried to get Jersey City and was rejected, then Secaucus-North Bergen for my second attempt and also rejected. After my third attempt, the $55 price was finally accepted.Has anyone stayed at this hotel (Wyndham Newark Airport Hotel)? August 3 is our 3rd wedding anniversary, does anyone have any suggestions on places to eat that doesn't hurt the budget? Is this hotel close to a PATH station?
dahammer Posted July 29, 2005 Report Posted July 29, 2005 in the lobby of the Hotel is an outpost of Shula Steak, I think it is a great place if you have all your teeth and cut your steak into small pieces!! :) I thought it was a bit high considering the quality of the food. When I'm in this area, I like to drive up to the Ironbound section of Newark to dine at the Spanish Tavern, it is a white tablecloth restaurant that has pretty good food and service is attentive. Don't be put off by the neighborhood, if you don't feel like driving, and given the general insanity of roads around EWR, the Spanish Tavern has its own shuttle bus and will pick you up and return you to the Wyndham or any of the EWR hotels for free. thereuare will have some other suggestions, as well. There are lots of places to dine in Hoboken on Washington street, it is a real scene if you can get there. This hotel is not close to a path station, but you can get the Hotel shuttle back to EWR and then catch a NJ Transit train into NYC's Penn Station. Just don't get off at Newark's Penn Station :)This hotel was renovated about 3 years ago, it was formerly a Holiday Inn that sat empty for about 2 years, if you're a light sleeper, ask for a room that does not face the airport and by all means, sign up for the Wyndham By Request program online and present your number upon check in as it might help to get the room that you prefer.
rezurrectah Posted July 29, 2005 Author Report Posted July 29, 2005 Thanks for the quick reply. I usually don't eat at restaurants located in the actual hotel. How far is the Spanish Tavern from the hotel? Also, what's wrong with the neighborhood? I don't get putoff too easily. I grew up in the Bronx...we get brought up tough! My wife and I are driving to Jersey so we will be willing to drive just about anywhere. She has already committed me to take her to IKEA.
dahammer Posted July 31, 2005 Report Posted July 31, 2005 The spanish tavern is about 15 minutes away, and with the free shuttle available from the restaurant, you can enjoy an extra few glasses of Sangria :) I think this restaurant also has a website. If you grew up in BNX, you won't have a problem with the Ironbound section of Newark. I have gone here with folks from out of town and they have enjoyed the restaurant. I'm not a big fan of chain restaurants, I will always try to go for a local independantly owned place if I can.PS if you go to Ikea, they have a cheap $.99 breakfast and only 3% sales tax on purchases as it is in some kind of Enterprise zone......you also have several outlet stores nearby in Jersey Gardens shopping center.
rezurrectah Posted August 12, 2005 Author Report Posted August 12, 2005 dahammer, I would like to thank you for telling me about the Spanish Tavern. It might of been the best spanish food I have ever tasted (besides my mom). I got a little tipsy with the five glasses of sangria. My wife and I ordered Fried Calamari for appetizers and the Paella Valenciada for the main. You were right about the staff being very attentive. Next time we're in NYC its going to be Spanish Tavern for dinner. The neighborhood wasn't even bad.... I've seen much worse. The hotel was good. While we were trying to check-in we had to wait in line for about 15 minutes. They never even made the bed on the second day we stayed there...all they did was throw the sheets on top of the bed. I didn't mind because it was our anniversary and they were going to end up on the floor anyway. We also went to IKEA and absolutely loved it. She went crazy walking just looking at everything and how inexpensive they were. Of course we ended up getting about six bags full of stuff. A wise old man once told me, "Happy Wife, Happy Life" and I know why.
