behull Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 My wife and I are planning a trip for Sept. We do not know NYC well but are interested in a broadway play, a trip to the art museum and central park and some sightseeing. We are comfortable with the public transportation to get around so my guess is we can be somewhat flexible in the area we stay. I am looking for suggestions in which area to stay and then a bidding strategy, also for the best multiday idea on public transport (daily passes, weekly passes or other). I understand this is a busy time and I can't look forward to the deal of a lifetime. Thanks.
thereuare Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 You should be fine with MTE, MTW, and/or UM/CPS.Do you have a maximum bid? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
behull Posted July 21, 2005 Author Report Posted July 21, 2005 No hard maximum, certainly looking for the best I can do given my inflexible time
thereuare Posted July 21, 2005 Report Posted July 21, 2005 Would you bid as high as $250? $300? $350?Whas it your 'next best option' to an opaque purchase?Would you want to book the Beekman Tower for $202/nite and use that as the "price to beat"? behull Posted July 21, 2005 Author Report Posted July 21, 2005 Yes, that plan with the Beekman towers as a backup will work for us.
thereuare Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 You have two re-bid zones at the 4* level. If you're not familiar with re-bidding pelase read RE-BIDDING EXPLAINED and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board. If you're all set, this is how i would proceed:Select 4* MTE...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTW...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and UM/CPS...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW and UM/CPS...Bid $190, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $195, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $200.Any questions feel free to ask.Good Luck and let us know how it goes. behull Posted July 22, 2005 Author Report Posted July 22, 2005 I tried the bidding stategy as outlined and did not have a winning bid. I plan to book the Beekman Towers through EasyClickTravel as a backup and try at least this stategey at least one more time after 7 days. Also I did use savingsbarn to get to priceline. Thanks for your help. Go Blue!
thereuare Posted July 22, 2005 Report Posted July 22, 2005 I would book the Beekman above asap as EasyClickTravel only gets a limited number of rooms at that rate and it is refundable up until 72 hours before check-in date, so while it can't hurt... it could help.Rates in NYC from mid-Auguest onward have been tough so far.Keep us updated. behull Posted July 26, 2005 Author Report Posted July 26, 2005 Tried again today without success, plan to try at least once in August and once a week or so before the trip and will update you. I had booked the Beekman Towers right after my last post so I have a backup. Thanks for the assistance.
behull Posted August 2, 2005 Author Report Posted August 2, 2005 Help. I requested a room at Beekman Tower through Easy Click Travel on 7/22. I had not gotten confirmation from them so I called today and found out they were unable to secure a room. Do you have any other ideas for a backup hotel? I have again tried the above bidding plan on priceline today without success. Also I could bid up to as high as $300/night if needed but would like to do better. Thanks.
thereuare Posted August 2, 2005 Report Posted August 2, 2005 The Beekman was available when first posted, so hopefully this will be a good lesson for everyone that a back-up isn't a back-up unless you book it!I don't see too much to use an alternative right now. zoischa Posted August 2, 2005 Report Posted August 2, 2005 I hope it's not bad practice to suggest this but have you checked out craigslist as a last resort? Folks in NY always have rooms for rent there. The last time I went I rented a quaint, nicely furnished, one bedroom condo for $500 for an entire week! Here's one I saw today:http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/vac/88526042.html
