shaner_13 Posted May 10, 2012 Report Posted May 10, 2012 I used the PRICELINE link and started at $70, working my way up to $80. It was a long shot and I wasn't too surprised when all were rejected. Now I'll try out 3.5* or just wait a day to increase my 4* bid.
shaner_13 Posted May 10, 2012 Author Report Posted May 10, 2012 3.5* failed as well. My highest bid was $70. What can I say, I'm cheap :DI offered $60 for a 3* downtown; they countered at $75 ("If you are willing to raise your price by $15 to $75 per room, per night, you can try the same request again right now."), and I decided not to go for it.
blkjck1 Posted May 10, 2012 Report Posted May 10, 2012 Don't be so cheap. There are only a few hotels I would want to stay at in downtown Edmonton, and this would be one of them. I would try $85-95 for a 4 star hote, and you'll likely get the Westin. It matches up on Hotwire at $103, and I have bid 20-10% less than HOTWIRE, and have succeeded in getting the Westin each time. Proud to be Canadian!
shaner_13 Posted May 10, 2012 Author Report Posted May 10, 2012 I don't need it urgently, so I can afford to start low/be cheap :D Good tip though. It sounds like I'm close to getting the Westin. I'll try again another day and hopefully get it for $95 or less.

shaner_13 Posted May 16, 2012 Author Report Posted May 16, 2012 After a few days of bidding, my $90 4* offer was accepted.
shaner_13 Posted May 16, 2012 Author Report Posted May 16, 2012 Unfortunately, booking directly on the Westin website works out to slightly cheaper than what I paid on priceline :(I had been checking Hotwire and Westin lately, so the price on Westin must have dropped very recently.Lesson learned: Always shop around. Priceline is normally a good deal, but is not always the best.(FYI I bid $85, they countered at $104, so I rebid using different zones at $90)
AaronJB Posted May 16, 2012 Report Posted May 16, 2012 I'm sorry to hear that the result is a disappointment; if you are able to find the hotel for cheaper elsewhere, I would definitely contact PRICELINE and ask regarding their Best Price Guarantee.Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
shaner_13 Posted May 16, 2012 Author Report Posted May 16, 2012 I didn't think to ask about the Best Price Guarantee. Thanks for pointing that out!I just called and asked about it and to be fair, it's really close. Westin is charging CAD$209.00 after taxes and my priceline total was US$208.34. However, they said that US$208.34 is equivalent to about CAD$206, which isn't true according to xe.com (currently CAD$209.94 as I write this). When I asked for clarification on where they have their exchange rate from, they quickly dismissed, then hung up on me.Any tips on what I should do? It's definitely splitting hairs, but the $25 refund would be nice, especially after I was treated rudely on the phone.
thereuare Posted May 16, 2012 Report Posted May 16, 2012 I think the exchange rate is going to be a moot point as the Best Rate Guarantee is based upon room rate only and it sounds as if your winning bid is less than the room rate you found elsewhere. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
