diesteldorf Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 I plan on being in NYC on Friday, October 21st. I am willing to go as high as $200 for the night. However, I would prefer to keep it around $150.I know that Priceline won't let you choose the exact hotel, but I would prefer to stay at the Waldorf Astoria if possible.
thereuare Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 Welcome to BetterBidding!I would count on not being successful at the Waldorf (especially since it shows as sold-out via the HILTON website.Given the above, do you want to restrict your bidding only to the MTE zone or can you add other zones (such as MTW and UM/CPS)?Let us know and we'll suggest how to proceed. diesteldorf Posted July 10, 2005 Author Report Posted July 10, 2005 Other Districts are fine. I would like to stay in a 4* if possible and, if the Waldorf doesn't work I guess that's OK.My travel plans may have changed slightly. I'm now thinking about getting a hotel for 10/20 and 10/21.For what it's worth, I could change my dates as well if necessary.I could get a room for 10/13 or 10/14. And I could get a room for 10/6 or 10/7.I guess the hotel isn't crucial if the Waldorf won't work, but does anyone know anything about the Algonquin? As you can probably guess, I'd like to stay at a place with history and a bit of character.
dahammer Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 let us know when your plans firm up and we will post a bidding strategy. List the dates of travel, check out date, and Maximum bid per night.
diesteldorf Posted July 11, 2005 Author Report Posted July 11, 2005 The dates really don't matter. I posted the 3 possibilites in case someone knew something about availability that I didn't. Perhaps, the rates may or may not be cheaper depending on the week I go.Regardless, I am planning to go in October. Traveling on Wednesday(10/5, 10/12, or 10/19). I will arrive and stay on Thursday (10/6, 10/13, or 10/20) and Friday (10/7, 10/14, 10/21) and checkout on Saturday (10/8, 10/15, or 10/22).Is it easier to get the Algonquin or the Waldorf Astoria? As I stated previously, the specific hotel isn't mandatory, but I would like the opportunity if it was feasible. My maximum bid per night (2) should be around $200.Thanks for any help you can provide.
thereuare Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 If the Algonquin was available for $200/nite but something along the lines of a Hilton was available for $125/nite... would you want the more expensive hotel? diesteldorf Posted July 12, 2005 Author Report Posted July 12, 2005 If the Hilton was also a 4* but cheaper, and as comfortable, I would take the Hilton. However, if I knew that there was a good strategy in order to obtain the Algonquin, I would be willing to pay more. For me, I like the historical aspects of hotels like the Algonquin and Waldorf. If I knew that my chances for either was slim to none, I would gladly go after a $125 *4 star if I could find one.Actually, I would rather stay at the Algonquin than the Walforf. How easy is it to get the Algonquin on Priceline/Hotwire?
thereuare Posted July 12, 2005 Report Posted July 12, 2005 The Algonquin has only appeared on Hotiwre, the Waldorf only on Priceline... both are 'not the expected result' and can't be targetted on Priceline (the Algonquin doesn't currently show for your dates on Hotwire). It's hard to advise on how to attempt to get either of these as we recommend DON'T BID HIGHER FOR A SPECIFIC HOTELWhat have been the best rates you've found for any of your above dates at the Waldorf or Algonquin? diesteldorf Posted July 13, 2005 Author Report Posted July 13, 2005 I admit that you are right that it is bad to bid for a specific hotel. At this point, I would settle for a nice 4 star st a good price. On average, for the possible days I selected, the best rates I found for the Waldorf Astoria and the Algonquin were between $390 and $410.Thanks for your help.
thereuare Posted July 13, 2005 Report Posted July 13, 2005 Which set of dates are you going for here? (1st preference?)Are these dates firm? Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
diesteldorf Posted July 14, 2005 Author Report Posted July 14, 2005 I plan on staying in New York October 20th and 21st. This is firm, however, if it didn't work, I would most likely go the week before, October 13th and 14th.
thereuare Posted July 14, 2005 Report Posted July 14, 2005 Select 4* MTW...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS...Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $135, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE and MTW...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* UM/CPS and MTW...Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 4* MTE, MTW, and UM/CPS...Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $165.The above for your first set of dates and if that fails try for your second set of dates.Rates are high for your dates (likely due to the Fall season), if the above fails for both dates i would book the Beekman Tower for $200 as a back-up as it is cancellable up until 72 hours before your check-in date (and has good reviews)Any questions feel free to ask. Good Luck and let us know how it goes. Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
diesteldorf Posted July 18, 2005 Author Report Posted July 18, 2005 Hello again,I tried all the bids you suggested and was rejected.I am upping my bid to $200.Can you tell me what the low number is I should start with. Should I start at $150 or higher? Thanks for your help.

diesteldorf Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 To those who wanted closure.....Actually, I didn't stay in a hotel and decided to take my chances at a hostel. I chose www.bigapplehostel.com and stayed there for $34 per night for 2 nights. It was clean and comfortable and, as it was right in Times Square, the location couldn't be beat.
