Please help. I'm new to this. I'm looking on Hotwire for a 4 or 5* hotel on the strip in Vegas for 10/28 - 11/1.

Hotwire shows me two interesting 4* options:

Upscale Hotel, 4*, South Strip - $167

Amenities: Resort, casino, restaurant, pool, fitness center, spa services, golf nearby, and tennis nearby

Upscale Hotel, 4*, North Strip - $189

Amenities: Casino, restaurant, pool, fitness center, spa, business center

Any ideas which hotels these are? And how come no 5* hotels came up?

Welcome to BetterBidding!

I believe the first hotel you listed also has a Business icon... Hotwire's splash page can only hold up to eight amenity icons, if you see eight icons, you need to click "view complete amenity list and description" to see the complete list.

Assuming the first one has a Business icon, i believe it is the Luxor.

Not sure of the second hotel.

No 5* properties show up because none have loaded 'opaque rates' into the system and are therefore unavailable.

As mentioned in this post, the opaque providers are not always the best answer in Las Vegas as they are in other cities. For example, you could book the Monte Carlo direct at their website for an average of $133/nite... a better hotel and choice than the Luxor above, and cheaper! If you're willing to SPLIT YOUR STAY, we can probably find you an even better deal!

Let us know if that is an option and we'll look further.

thanks! yeah, the Monte Carlo seems like the best option ... but it doesn't seem like it would be as much fun to stay at. I would definitly be willing to Split my Stay, but have a question about that: Typically, check-out time is 11am and check-in time is 3pm. Even with a late checkout, wouldn't that be a hassle?

Thanks again for the help. This site is amazing!

Hassle as in changing hotel? Some consider it a hassle and wouldn't do it even if they could save $50... others would do it if they coudl save $5.

Since you don't think the Monte Carlo would be much fun (they do have one of the best pool areas in Vegas), what is it that you are looking for in a hotel for your stay?

By hassle I mean the 3 or 4 hours that you are with your bags and without a room. Guess you could always just check the bags at a front desk though, right?

I guess I just don't know much about the Monte Carlo. I will look into it some more. Maybe that is the way to go. Another option i was looking at was the Hawthorn Suites, which are right behind San Remo. Definitly not the "fun" place I'm looking for, but seems to be a cheap and somewhat quality alternative in a still decent location. I like the South end of the Strip.

By "fun," I mean theme-based but not too cheesy. I was hoping for something along the lines of Paris, Venetian, or even Aladdin ... but they all seem to be out of my price range, which is around $150, give or take. Do you think the Monte Carlo would be along the lines of what I am looking for?

Thanks again for your help.

edit to add- i am not really interested in the pool area. And if I am staying in a casino, i'd like there to be some reasonable but tasty food options. A nice, plush, clean room that is easily accesible would seal it for me.

the beauty of the Monte Carlo is its location, very walkable to the Aladdin, NYNY, MGM Grand, Bellagio. The Luxor is at the bottom of the strip and you will be taking shuttle busses or cabs to get around. You might ask for a late check out and an early check if you split your bid, if not, leave the bags with the bellman and explore.

As dahammer points out, Vegas is all about location, location, location... and for that reason i would not go with the Hawthorne Suites.

One disadvantage of a theme hotel is that the 'common areas' get crowded at times with guests from other hotels who come to see the "attraction" (whether it be lions, tigers, volcanos, pyramids, etc, etc). That doesn't happen at the Monte Carlo, yet you can easily visit the other hotels where you do want to see the 'theme'.

Great points! thank you, this site really rocks!

I am going to go ahead and book the Monte Carlo ... is there a link through this site I should use that would bestow some sort of benefit for the site?

Also, now that I got choice of hotel out of the way, any tips on how to get a free or cheep room upgrade? Or to atleast ensure a room with a decent view? My fiance and I will be celebrating our 7th year together, will that help us at all?

Thanks for asking... unfortunately we do not have an affiliate link to the Monte Carlo, this one is "on the house". :)

Twenty bucks to the front desk clerk may get you the review or other requsts you want. See this thread for more details: HOTEL TIPPING.
