Hotwire Hotel: 2.5* San Diego (Old Town) La Quinta Old Town

We wanted to stay in Old Town San Diego and booked very last minute (1 day prior) and settled for a 2.5* because we wanted breakfast too, even though we thought that $121 was a bit steep for this kind of hotel and got La Quinta Inn. Amenities: Smoke Free Rooms, Airport Shuttle, Complimentary Breakfast, Pool(s), Laundry Facilities (self-service), High-Speed Internet Access. We should've done our homework to see what a 2.5* hotel was worth, because at that price, it was only a few dollars below their regular rate for a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 children).

Now what happened was when we got there, the lady at the front desk told us we would only get a room with 1 king bed because that's what we can get off Hotwire, and added that "and it's by the freeway" as if this is the deserved punishment for booking on Hotwire. I showed her my receipt that we actually save only a few dollars and that we have the right to a room for all 4 because this is part of the Hotwire guarantee, to accommodate the number of guests reserved for. She offered to upgrade us to a room for 4 if we paid an extra $10. We refused because the cost for the room would then be more than their regular rate. She couldn't care less. We had to call Hotwire and after they called the hotel to confirm their non-compliance, Hotwire offered that we go ahead and pay the upgrade and they would "look into reimbursing us" for this afterwards. Which meant to me that they might not and it would be a lot of hassle writing to them, including the invoice, etc etc all for a measly $10 for a hotel that we no longer wanted to stay at since the front desk was so nasty and it was really right next to a noisy and ugly freeway. So after being on the phone for a loooong time, they agreed to refund us due to the hotel's not being able to accommodate the 4 of us.

I've never booked at such a last minute on Hotwire and think that that's why we had very little choice left. We were able to snag the Hilton in the Gaslamp district (smack-dab in downtown SD) for the same price after we left La Quinta, though, so it turned out great for us in the end.
