steven b Posted May 17, 2005 Author Report Posted May 17, 2005 Arrive NYC May 20, 2005Depart NYC May 23, 2005Seeking 3* NYC Upper East Side or Midtown EastHow low should I start on Priceline? Is $120 a realistic place to start? Thanks
thereuare Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 Looking at rates it doesn't appear that $120 (or thereabouts) is going to be enough... what is your maximum bid? Also, i would highly recommend adding other zones (such as MTW and UM/CPS) in order to increase your chances. steven b Posted May 17, 2005 Author Report Posted May 17, 2005 Iam a looking for a "reasonable" starting bid. Would $150 be more realistic?

thereuare Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 ... and only those two zone, correct?I also assume you are familiar with RE-BIDDING? (you have one re-bid zone at the 3* level) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
steven b Posted May 17, 2005 Author Report Posted May 17, 2005 i read the post on zone bidding, but couldnt work out what to do.could you give me the steps to folow in my case?ThanksSteven
thereuare Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 We'll teach you how to do it (as you should/need to check yourself before you actually start bidding in order to make sure nothing has changed)...Go to priceline and enter 'new york city' in the city box.Write down each sub-zone within NYC.Select the first zone, click next, write down the highest rated star offered in the zone.Click BACK, UNCHECK the current zone, checkmark the next zone, and repeat the process.Report back each zone and the highest rated hotel in each zone and we'll take the next step. thereuare Posted May 17, 2005 Report Posted May 17, 2005 So regarding re-bidding... So according to your list above the highest rated hotel offered in the UWS zone is 2.5*. Therefore if you bid 3* in ZoneX and the UWS, if you are successful the resulting hotel would have to be in ZoneX because there are no hotels that meet your 3* criteria in the UWS zone.See the graphic about 9-10 posts down in THIS THREAD and let us know if it now makes sense. If so we'll move forward. thereuare Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 I don't think $180 is going to be enough, but if you want to try:Select 3* MTE...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously.Select 3* UES...Bid $160, if rejected add MTE...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180.Good Luck and let us know how it goes.Any questions feel free to ask. steven b Posted May 18, 2005 Author Report Posted May 18, 2005 Here is what happened."Select 3* MTE...Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160, if rejected close browser and re-access priceline however you did previously."I did this. Bids not accepted."Select 3* UES...Bid $160, if rejected add MTE...Bid $170, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $180."I waited a few minutes, then re-tried but with bids of $200, $220, $240At $240 I was successful and was "upgraded" to the Intercontinental Barclay (MTE) a 4* hotel!Hopefully, I didn't panic and overbid, but I learned alot this time and will only get better! Thanks so much for your website and your help. Please note I linked into Priceline.com from savingsbarn.comCheersSteven B
thereuare Posted May 18, 2005 Report Posted May 18, 2005 I could tell based upon rates that this was likely going to require more than the $180. Given that rates direct from the InterContinental website are over $100 more than your accepted bid i think you did well, although knowing ahead of time you were willing to go into the $200's we would have researched alternatives a bit more.Personally on a stay such as this i probably would have split my bid (Sundays in NYC are often downright cheap) and/or considered others zones in an attempt to get something less expensive (NYC is easy to get around from most of midtown)... but not knowing your plans or needs this may not have been a possibility for you.BTW, you're not too far from my favorite breakfast recommendation... Ess-A-Bagel on 51st St and Thrid Ave. One of the best bagels in the city and an inexpensive breakfast stop for one (or more) of your mornings.Enjoy your stay, and thank you very much for using the PRICELINE link at SavingsBarn.com to begin your bid... we appreciate it!
