I used the $20 trick at the Vdara last week during my 3-night trip won through priceline, and was able to get an upgrade at checkin. However, since you're only staying one night, that might not be worth it for you since all the rooms are very nice.

It is where you slip the hotel clerk $20 and ask them if they have any complimentary hotel room upgrades.

I will be doing this on June 4th at the Vdara (my wife will be hiding). I will let you know how I do.
