annemak Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 I am looking at hotels in the LGA area on Hotwire, noticed that the Crowne Plaza is one of the big ones, Hotwire is listing a $104 as a best value for 5/20-5/22, amenities: shuttle, restaurant, pool, fitness, business, laundry. Might this be the Crowne? Any other thoughts as to what this would be? Would I be better off to take this one or try for the rate on Priceline...do they use different hotels between the two, or would I be pretty likely on a 3* LGA to get the Crowne? Thanks...
thereuare Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 Welcome to BetterBidding! What is the star rating of the HOTWIRE hotel you're seeing?I'll also add "i assume you need to be in this area for a reason"? We don't see many multi-nite stays in this area so i want to make sure you know this is where you need to be and not planning on using it as a less expensive place to commute to/from NYC. annemak Posted May 11, 2005 Author Report Posted May 11, 2005 it was a 3* and based on the current prices i'm finding for hotels in the city, i thought it would be better to stay outside the city? am i being completely naive? we are flying in/out of lga and the hotel prices right now for that weekend are all in the high 200's low 300 range, even on hotwire. based on the cost to get to/from airport and the high cost of the hotels that weekend i don't know which route i should take. i don't want to spend more than $200 a night at the most on a room if we stayed in the city. any suggestions?
thereuare Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 If you want the Crowne Plaza it is available thru QUICKBOOK for $99/nite... you'll know exactly what you're getting and it's cheaper than the hotwire offer above. However, i don't recommend this area to commute to/from NYC... there is absolutely nothing in the nearby area and many would not likely feel safe taking mass transit back to the hotel late at nite (so figure $25 cab rides).Although it will take you longer to get to from the airport i would recommend the Jersey City (NJ) area. The area around the hotel is nice, and provides safe 24/7 mass transit service into NYC (15 minutes to midtown, under 10 minutes to downtown) via the PATH train.HOTWIRE has what is believe to be the Hyatt on the Hudson (a great hotel) for $169/nite or if you're looking to save more money the Candelwood Suites is available for $109. Of course you could try to beat these prices on Priceline although you'll have less certainty of what you're likely to get.Let us know your thoughts and we'll try to advise further accordingly. annemak Posted May 11, 2005 Author Report Posted May 11, 2005 thanks for all of the advice...do i have any chance of getting a decent room in the city for under $200 on priceline perhaps?also, do would i be traveling to NJ by cab from LGA?thanks so much!!
thereuare Posted May 11, 2005 Report Posted May 11, 2005 Based upon current rates it's not likely... but it doesn't cost you anything to try.If you need specific help just let us know the zone(s) and star leve that you are interested in and we'll try to suggest a strategy to follow. annemak Posted May 12, 2005 Author Report Posted May 12, 2005 Got this hotel for $166 5/20-5/22 plus $10 off each night with the GIFTCARD06 promotion and will send in my $30 Entertainment Book rebate...considering there is not a hotel to be found in NYC for even twice that right now, I thought it was a good deal! I booked through the HOTWIRE link on this site...thereuare, thanks for your help!!
annemak Posted May 12, 2005 Author Report Posted May 12, 2005 what's the easiest route?what's the most inexpensive route? thanks...
Aprilmay Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 When I was in NYC in December, we stayed at the Crowne Plaza Laguardia after our late flight arrival. The next morning we needed to get to they Hyatt, where were spending the remainder of our trip. The Crowne Plaza front desk clerk called us a car (Lincoln Towncar, I believe) that took us to WTC for $40 plus tip. There is no toll. The driver said that from LGA, a trip to anywhere in Manhattan is a flat $40. Then from WTC, we hopped on the PATH ($1.50 one way) and one stop later we were at the Hyatt's doorstep. I'm sure there is a way to take buses from LGA to WTC, but I imagine that would be very time consuming. Thereuare is a Jersey City expert, so I bet he'll be able to help you further. Good luck, and have fun. The JC Hyatt is a great hotel.
thereuare Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 All things considered this works out to be a very good deal for your (difficult) dates... more importantly i'm certain you will enjoy your stay better than if you had stayed by LGA (as soon as you leave LGA you'll see the hotels on the other side of the highway and you'll understand why).I believe the "$40 to anywhere in Manhattan" is the town car rate, not a NYC Taxi (a yellow car) rate, which would be a little bit cheaper. Towncars are 'private for higher' and set the fare based upon the trip, while taxis (in most instances) are on the meter.I'm going to add a "LGA to Jersey City via Mass Transit" thread/post within the next 24 hours... i'll reply with a link to it here. If it's not done in 24 hours please send me a PM to remind me as it means i either forgot or got tied up with some other things. Aprilmay Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 Yes, the $40 was "the towncar rate," but when I asked the clerk at the Crowne Plaza to call me a cab, he said that NYC yellow cabs would not come to the hotel to pick up. They would only take you to NYC if they were already dropping off at the Crowne Plaza. He said that I could take the hotel shuttle back to the airport and catch a cab there (???) This all sounded bizarre to me, but since I had never been to NYC before and didn't know any different, we took the car that they called for us.
thereuare Posted May 12, 2005 Report Posted May 12, 2005 The above is correct... in NYC you don't "call for a taxi", you simply go out on the street and flag one down that is available (which you could have done if there was any sort of traffic in front of the hotel). Aprilmay Posted May 13, 2005 Report Posted May 13, 2005 Ahhhh......can you tell I'm a country girl from the deep South? My first taxi ride was actually in NYC on the vacation of which I was speaking. Thanks for clarifying that!
